Plus the names of the schools is a dead giveaway.

Special teachers (not necessarily extra smart, but long on patience, understanding and empathy) are needed to teach special needs students. The shortage is so severe that school districts will often pay premium salaries or bonuses to attract them.

Unfortunately, the extra pay often attracts exactly the wrong kind of people instead.

I worked with a wonderful special ed teacher for nearly thirty years. Her patience, empathy, and understanding allowed her students to accomplish more than they or their parents ever expected. She was the sweetest, kindest person you could hope to meet. But woe betide anyone who gave “her” kids any kind of trouble.
