Animals Cat advocates say declawing is ‘brutal.’ New York lawmakers just voted to ban the procedure.

(Hans Pennink/AP) By Michael Brice-Saddler June 4 New York is one signature away from becoming the first state in the country to ban cat declawing, a practice advocates say serves no benefit to felines and is done typically out of convenience.
The bill, which passed by a wide margin Tuesday in the state’s majority-Democrat Assembly and Senate, would impose a $1,000 fine on veterinarians who perform the procedure for nonmedical purposes. That means pet owners in the state would no longer be able to have their cats declawed for cosmetic, aesthetic and other ostensible reasons.
One of several lawmakers to champion the measure, Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) was visibly jubilant after the vote. She has previously rallied against declawing and condemned its invasive nature in a statement: “It is not like getting a mani/pedi,” she said. “It’s a brutal surgical procedure.”

Agreed. It should be common sense and not require a law - declawing is very bad for the physical and mental health of the cat, and it is much simpler to train the cat to use a scratching post.

Declawing a cat is cruel and basically a death sentence if they ever get outside. Good for New York.
It’s not only cruel, it’s irresponsible. You never know when for one reason or another, your cat may wind up outside needing to defend itself. Even if you keep it strictly indoors, something could happen to you and it might pass to another owner who isn’t as responsible.

If you feel the odd need to declaw your cat you might as well pull it’s teeth out while you’re at it.
... it’s no longer able to run, defend itself, and climb away from danger. Also, if the cat’s going to be sharing a house with one or more dogs, especially playful large breed dogs, the cat needs to be able to give the doggies painful lessons in kitty etiquette.

My cat is 21 years (+). She’s mastered climbing, killing prey and running to this day and has also taught 3 different dogs (including 2 Akitas who were safer than the beagle) basic etiquette.
She is polydactyl. Vet removed 23 claws total from all four feet and left her with the normal number of claws in the normal places on the rear. He has assured me that whatever laws are passed, he will declaw the front paws of any kitten we may adopt in future. Otherwise, the kittens will grow up feral and without family.
My DIL has those scratching pads. Her house is littered with the debris. Oh and I forgot: my cat is uninterested in catnip.
If the procedure is “brutal” then I guess they shouldn’t spay or neuter them either. Imagine condemning a cat to no sex life - that’s barbarian!
My, now deceased, cat taught basic etiquette to a (now deceased) American Staffordshire Terrier, Lab, Golden mix and a still surviving Great Dane. No kitty now, but the AST/Lab cross has been replaced by a very lively American Bulldog, AST, German Shepard, Lab mix. Funny thing how those Bully dogs gradually get to you.

The vet assured me that had I let him outside, which I did not for his own health’s sake, he had access to the claws he’d ever need for defense as well as climbing any tree, fence, light post, etc!
That being said, though removing claws is more than removing an injured fingernail or toenail to us, as is mostly the case, they do grow back.
No, it does remove the part of the paw where the claw lives and grows.
Merely cutting back those nails won’t work, they grow back and are just as strong and sharp as before.
While cats have been domesticated hundreds of years, their nature never changes and indoor cats with dominating nature’s can make a shambles of your home and I’ve never yet seen a cat settle for so-called scratching posts - those are sold to unsuspecting suckers!
Keep the claws AND the cat inside. They are killing machines. Up to 3.7 billion birds per year.
My next door neighbor's cat was a declawed house cat who got out one day and was killed by her neighbor's dog when it tried to get into a tree and couldn't. The yard was full of 5 and 6 year olds having a play group when they got to watch this dog tear the cat to pieces.
Should be none of their GD business.
I have had two declawed cats. One adapted very well. The other cat never got over that procedure. They were both indoor/outdoor cats. And they never came home all beat up from losing a fight.
Having said that I’ll never do it again.

You can’t declaw a cat in New York but you can kill a fully-formed baby in the womb. What more needs to be said about how depraved the state is?
