Deaf woman concerned over note from Portland drive-thru

PORTLAND, Maine — When Vera Mauro comes to a drive-thru, she’ll usually keep driving toward the window. Mauro is deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. She typically writes her order down on paper, but on Tuesday, her usual pattern didn’t work when she stopped for a drink at a Portland Dunkin'.

“The woman didn't exactly see me, so I used the horn. Yet she ignored, texted on her phone and made another person's drink, and when she came back, I held up the order on the paper. She saw that I had it, gave me an attitude,” said Mauro.

In return, she received a note asking her to start using the inside storefront and to not use the drive-thru.

Mauro explained that she found the note to be offensive and tried to reach out to the store about it several times. The location manager responded to her in an email, offering a gift card and asking her to remove her post from Facebook.

“That was not enough,” said Mauro

From an almost deaf person - F - U!

I don’t believe you for a second. You are saying that if the child needs glasses parents might say NO? Granted there are some weirdos out there but don’t lump us all in one basket. I spend most of my time apologizing to people for my deafness. People think I’m rude or stupid or weird. Deaf people have been shot in the back by police cause they didn’t respond to commands they don’t hear. Deaf folks don’t get a white cane.
And also important to know that hearing aids are not cheap - $4K - $6K easy. Mostly they create more issues than they solve.

I spend most of my time apologizing to people for my deafness.

Why would you feel a need to do that?

Or an assistant standing next to the intercom tower 24/7, ready and waiting for the next deaf person to arrive.

Any decent person would go out of their way to treat the deaf, hard of hearing or other disabled persons with respect and care. I would not act like her but I would be proactive to receive her message.

I don't apologize for being deaf. At the same time, I'm not militant about being deaf. I love people whether you're deaf or hearing. 😎

Hey! Good to hear from you! I’m always glad to learn about my FRiends.

Hey! Thank you! Hopefully everyone on this thread is learning from each other. For example, Jim Robinson has a disabilty. So it's important to keep that in mind. Just because you have all your senses today does not mean you will have everything tomorrow. Things can change quickly. So it's important to be considerate of others.

It is not unreasonable to expect minor accommodation.

Correct. So far Panera Bread, McDonalds, Sheetz, just to name a few, are installing kiosks for customers to use. Very user friendly for deaf and hard of hearing. Hope we'll see more of that and businesses will place them at drive thru so deaf and hard of hearing customers will be able to communicate their orders

I actually sympathize with her situation. What got my radar was her refusal to accept an apology, and the fact she must have shopped this incident to the media.

I’m thinking this might be somewhat staged. I’m probably right....

I agree - I prefer to patronize establishments exhibiting a bunch of common-sense, and refusing to bow to those with an axe to grind.

Seriously?

Ya know, I don’t go away a lot so I don’t mind first class when I go.

But for Vegas it’s easy cause it’s so cheap.

They figure you’ll gamble away the rest :)

Other places, it can be a BIG difference.

Blind drivers need money, too.

I was told that this was forced upon them by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our Nation is sinking under the weight of many Unintended Consequences. (Among other things)

It say a Portland Dunkin, as in DUNKIN DONUTS. There are at least three with drive thru in Portland so I I don’t know which one they are referring to. One of the original Portland locations is building a bigger better locations next to their original place. It will have two lanes. It current does 1.4 million per year in business based on a document they submitted for a change they need from the city council. I don’t think they expected the document to be made public.

As to the woman and event, she should not have been treated as she was and the manager should not have told her to always park and come inside. I did not read all of this version of the story, but the franchise owner reached put to her and seems to be satisfied with his response.

As I think most people would. A business that wanted to add a kiosk drive-up for the hearing impaired could do that as a competitive advantage.

My point was, asking a deaf person to come inside is not an unreasonable accommodation; this woman is simply being nasty.
