Pete Buttiplugieg wants to know when Uranus will be at its closest approach to South Bend.
To: BenLurkin
Cool! I put it on my calendar with reminders 1 day in advance and 2 hours in advance of 9 PM Monday night. Fingers crossed for clear skies.

As long as Uranus keeps its distance.

First I have to identify Jupiter! Sorry but all shiny objects in sky look the same to me. Only object I can recognize for sure is our own Moon! Thank goodness there is only one moon this planet has, otherwise I would be wondering which moon is that!

Jupiter will be well positioned for viewing well after the 10th. I believe June 10 is first quarter moon, so for a week or so after that moonlight will make seeing the moons harder.
Remarkably Galileo discovered the four large moons of Jupiter without binoculars!
To: BenLurkin
Galileo discovered the four moons of Jupiter with a telescope with about 4x magnification and a rather small lens. The trick to seeing the Galilean moons is to be able to hold the binoculars steady. Jupiter will likely be the brightest thing in the night sky except for the moon. It won’t twinkle and it will be a warm white.

To those posing the question: It will be in the southern sky.
Modify the date/time, enter your own location and don’t bother with registering. Follow the instructions and you’ll find it.

Uhh, the moons have always been visible with binoculars. Try it sometime.

Wait, if earth is directly between the sun and Jupiter, won’t that cause a jovian eclipse?

The planet will reach opposition, the annual occurrence when the Jupiter, Earth and the Sun are arranged in a straight line, with Earth in the center. For it to be annual, that means Jupiter never moves.

I was so excited to bring out my telescope to check it out but the forecast is cloudy weather and rain all week. That is what one gets living in Central VA.
