Los Angeles homeless population hits 36,000 in dramatic rise
The Guardian ^ | Sam Levin

Los Angeles has experienced a 16% increase in the homeless population over the last year, the latest sign of severe income inequality and a worsening housing crisis plaguing California. There are now more than 36,000 homeless people in the city of LA, and nearly 59,000 across LA county, a 16% and 12% uptick respectively, according to an annual LA county report released on Tuesday. The county “point-in-time count”, conducted by thousands of volunteers in January each year, is an estimate of the number of people living on the street, in tents, in cars and in shelters. The sharp increases paint a picture of a growing public health crisis in a region home to some of the richest neighborhoods and people in the US. Some key data from the report: More than 44,000 (75%) of the homeless population are unsheltered, with more than 16,000 people living in cars and more than 11,000 in tents and makeshift shelters.

“If you’re evicted in Los Angeles, you’re evicted from Los Angeles. If you want to remain housed, you have to leave the city completely.”

You make this sound like a problem when it actually seems to be a solution. Perhaps the skill sets in LA are more demanding than those in the lesser populated (i.e., agricultural) regions of the state. Seems to me moving out of LA is a viable solution.

They haven’t talked about homelessness since they blamed it and AIDS on Reagan. But then there was nothing to counter them.

This is a consequence of foreign cash buyers, many of them coming from China. We have had a decade long influx of foreign buyers in SoCal who have driven prices above what California natives can afford even on two salaries. In my area 40 yr old tract houses are getting $450/sq ft.

This prices out new buyers, at least the ones born here. And these high prices get passed along to renters. Some are grandfathered in with landlords who aren’t marking rents to market. But if a place sells those renters are out of luck and they will never find places renting for close to what they had been paying. Very hard on the elderly who have been renting for decades.

Another huge problem is all the housing being occupied by illegal aliens. The ones who don’t plan to stay here are willing to live 20 to a house and that allows them to pay very high rents while turning the neighborhoods into dumps.

LA has been an expensive area for real estate for much more than a decade, so blaming the Chinese isn’t going to explain it. Going back to post WWII, look at real estate prices in LA compared to the national average. It’s been a problem for at least 60 years. Also, look at what happened after rent controls started in LA in 1978. Those controls just made things worse...as they always do.

Chinese buyers are ONE factor in the current market as they have been since about 2000.

The drugs are the variable that fuels this whole mess. But pro drug addicts and libertardarians on FR hide from it.

People don't understand the addict mentality. Live in a box? Check. Defecate under a street lamp? Check. It's worth it for the ability to stay high. The high of the addict is all that matters. Everything else is secondary.

And when these dregs of society find a bunch of lazy cops, and lazy city administrators, and liberal fools, all of whom enable them to stay stoned, said addicts will flood to that city. LA. San fran. Portland. Seattle. Juno, Alaska. It doesn't matter. They'll find a way.

Well I’ve been hearing the China Full Cash Buyer tale for years from my friends here in SoCal who sell real estate, and they tend to know who is buying their listings. I don’t think they are making it all up.

Oddly enough, some of us who have lived in SoCal for the last 50 years actually do have some idea of what goes on here. Why freepers who don’t live in California have more expertise than those of us who are here is just one of life’s mysteries.

I have noticed that as well. Plus many of the beggars on the streets are now white males who speak English with an American accent. Maybe white males are the last ones hired. Maybe these men used to have businesses but were undercut by other businesses hiring illegal labor. Maybe they couldn’t afford the ridiculous LA rents and didn’t want to live in an apartment with 19 roommates, like illegals do. Not sure the reasons, but like you, I’ve definitely noticed it.

What many folks don't understand, is this is BY DESIGN.

Leftists HATE the middle and working class. That is why middle and working class people are the first to flee leftist policies and government.

Leftists ALWAYS want a two-tiered system: One with them at the top, and a huge underclass worshipping them, begging them for food and other necessities.

The homeless crisis is created by artificially drying up the supply side of the housing dynamic. This is done through things such as rent control, NIMBY activism in the name of the environment or social justice (paid for and controlled by the elites), lengthy permit process, and anti-landlord laws.

Trust me, there are developers just chomping at the bit to build in CA, but the elites don't want them to. So they artificially dry up the supply of housing, then they create so-called homeless advocates who get federal tax-dollars to keep the homeless crisis going.

IT'S ALL A SCAM!

I drive past these tents every morning. This is not the decrepit part of Los Angeles. This is not skid row. This is in the nicer section of the downtown area.

If you are in a wheel chair, no chance to get down a sidewalk.

What destructive locust like pests. Less than 40K vagrants out of a population of over 3M and they are wrecking the heart of the city. Where did these roaches come from. Bums have always been around but not ones that crate personal landfills on the sidewalks, own large furniture items, and wallow in filth as though it were the tenth century. What is going on here and in other cities?

Why is this a surprise? When you allow your city to develop a reputation for not enforcing the law, this is what you get.
