Is Apple continuing to move away from the Mac computer? Most of the platform seems to be getting long in the tooth and hardware updates are now few and far between. It’s been years since the last Mac Mini refresh.
The Mac mini, while in the past has multiple years between updates, was last updated October 2018.
I have a Galaxy Note 9. The only apps that come to mind that I’ve downloaded are Dolphin Browser, Barcharts, and Amazon Kindle. You’re right, I don’t know if I have Lollipop, Icecream or Strawberry Daquri for an operating system.
Yay! The new Mac Pro is finally announced!
Boo! Starting at $6K? WTF!
I have been putting off replacing my 6 year old Mac Pro because I wanted the new one, but now, holy crap, $6K?
I got my last one for just under $3K and my wife almost had a cow about that. She now says that I can only get my Mac Pro if she gets a new sewing machine of equal value!
I didn't max out my Mini but I did get the 3.2 ghz 6 core i7 chip, and 500 gig ssd. Out scores my 2012 12 core Mac Pro.
Quote any PC with similar specs for less.
The monitor is studio quality that compares well with $43,000.00 competitor. Apples to apples.
I paid nearly $4,000.00 for a g5 MacPro back in the day so what is the beef?
One...the monitor is not included in the $6K starter price.
The “old” starter price for Mac Pros up until now were in the $3K range.
What they did is akin to Ford announcing they are relaunching the Ford Ranger with a starting price of $50K. Now you may be able to load up a Ranger with goodies to get it to $50K, but it STARTS at $24K.
I would have been happy with a little less horsepower in the Mac Pro and been able to get in for $4K.
It does a bit on the warm side though.
Mine hits 205 compressing mp4 to mp5, worries me some. Just running a couple browsers and EyeTV now and temp is 170. I have 7 SSDs running in eternal boxes.
This one is not for the casual user it is strictly a Pro model. Even if you can afford it do you actually need that much or is it just a lust thing like I have.
My new Mini Pro scores nearly 3 time faster than my 12 core 2012 Mac Pro and I could get by anymore with a 2012 Mini Core i7.
I am running a 70 inch 4k TV as a monitor because I need to see what I am doing. The monitor they promoted is strictly for Pros and they were comparing it with (I think) a $24,000 studio monitor, but a thousand for a stand is outrageous even for Apple.
A PC with somewhat similar basic specs and a less powerful XEON processor than the custom one being made for Apples basic model with fewer expansion slots and lower overall power supply retails for $8500, also without a monitor. A Sony 27 5k reference monitor without all the features of Apples 32 6k $4,999 monitor retails for over $43,000. Apples monitor is a bargain! Oh, no one mentioned that it pivots to portrait orientation. . . one reason for the $999 cost of the interactive stand.
Actually, no, it isnt. I bought a $500 VESA compliant stand for a 27 iMac for my office not too long ago. Why so expensive? Because it needed to move around frequently and not work loose while being easy to manipulate and stay where it was placed every time. Add the fact that Apples monitor pivots 90º to portrait mode and you can understand why it costs $999 to support that pivoting.
The 2012 MacPro 3.06 GHz MacBench scores
Single core 2640
Multi core 17374
MacMini Pro 3.27 Ghz 6 core i7
Single core 5658
Multi core 24059
My MiniPro with 3.2 Ghz i7 processor, 500 gig SSD and 16 gigs of ram costs about half that $3000.00 you want to spend. and outscores the Best 2012 Mac Pro by a wide margin, think smaller.
