Out-of-control cruise ship plows into tourist boat, dock in Venice

Video shows the luxury MSC Opera unable to stop and repeatedly blaring its horn as it hits the much-smaller River Countess, eventually pushing it into the dock despite the efforts of towboats to stop it.

Four female tourists were injured on the sightseeing boat that had 110 passengers, officials said.

MSC Cruises blamed a mechanical problem on its ship, which can carry over 2,675 passengers in 1,071 cabins, as it tried to dock in the Giudecca Canal.

Italian officials immediately called for all such cruise ships to be banned from using the major thoroughfare that leads to Saint Mark’s Square

“Today’s accident in the port of Venice proves that cruise ships shouldn’t be allowed to pass down the Giudecca anymore,” insisted Italy’s transport minister, Danilo Toninelli.

Not the captains fault. He was eaten by the tyrannosaurus rex and therefore not culpable.

I have towing endorsements (as most do) and was not impressed by the actions of the escort vessels.

“It wasn’t docked.”

If you are going to contradict someone you should make sure you are correct.

You took a cruise and now you are a maritime expert.
Since I just got off a plane from Europe, I guess I am now a pilot.

Great logic there, Norm.

Without knowing how much work, dedication, and experience it takes to become a captain of a cruise ship you have the chutzpah to call him/her a nincompoop? You sir, have no idea what you are talking about.

I’ve been on a fair number of old and new cruise ships for close to 40 years,, reliance on technology and gadgets and presence of mind and sight mixed together have usually done the trick..

but occasionally, stuff happens, too bad Sandra Bullock wasn’t there to save the day or Cap’n Stubing.

Helluva note this happened to a ship named the Opera.. and this so soon after the Budapest tragedy.

btw, nincompoop may be a bit much, more like, recently employed mariner would be a better fit.

Bon Appetit!! and nice wings.

Human error? Well, after all we're talking about a vessel moving on the surface of water. Not exactly like you can hit the brakes on the asphalt.

Captain knew the boat was under other control and decided to shag a attendant -— on the control console and a lever got hit....

Must be a regional thing——around here a dock is a structure-—it WAS pushed into a structure.

Of course,it’s humbling!

I’ll just hum “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” while I think about my next incorrect comment.
