As boxer Andy Ruiz Jr. prepared to step on the scale during the weigh-in Friday afternoon for his bout against U.K. heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, he heard a taunting chant from Joshuas rowdy British fans: Who are ya? You fat bastard!
The flabby Ruiz, who is listed as 6-foot-2, smiled and flexed his biceps as he tipped the scales at 268 pounds.
Ruizs dream, of course, was to win the heavyweight title, which he pulled off in shocking fashion, stopping Joshua via a seventh-round technical knockout on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden that instantly stands as one of boxings greatest upsets ever.
Ruiz, who habitually eats a candy bar before his fights and joked that he was hopeful for a Snickers deal, was facing an opponent in Joshua, who has a chiseled physique that resembles the Incredible Hulk.

“It’s over, Dude. Adios!”
I watched this kid Ruiz fight and I have to say...he looks like he could demolish Deontay Wilder. That’s the fight I’m waiting for.
Ruiz kinda punches like Tyson: fast and hard.
“I don’t know who the photo is of because the poster doesn’t identify him.”
It’s a signed photo.
Exactly! loved watching him play for the Rangers.
If you are in the game with boxing, you know that weight is a weapon used to lean on and push your opponent into exhaustion.
A number of years ago I went to Las Vegas and had lunch in the deli in the forum at Caesar’s. I ordered a sandwich they had because it had all the things I like on one: different luncheon meats, cheeses, and veggies. It arrived and I found out it was a 10 pieces of bread stacked with every other slice with these things. I ate about a quarter of it before it was time to loosen the belt. I never realized it was going to be that big and that I could never sit down and eat one. I was told the guy they named it for normally ordered two of those at a sitting. He is George Foreman, former world heavyweight champion.

I dunno man.
As an ex boxer, yeah, he’s strong and he’ll win some, even more than some maybe.
But a guy with the same skills who is in great shape will tear him to pieces.
butterbean, who people point to, couldn’t defeat almost FIFTY THREE year old ex champ larry holmes.
Granted he was quite a bit heavier.
But a Tysen in his prime, both Klitchkos, Holeyfield, Lewis, and Absolutely from further back..Frazier, Ali and Foreman would have beaten this guy.
I have NO doubt about any of that.
It’s an EXHAUSTING sport and it’s very likely his opponent just wasn’t that good, I dont care where he is ranked.
The Incredible Bulk!
Funny how Butterbean’s signature actually resembles his body.
Guessing? It is eaten with a knife and fork?
George Forman size hands might be required to hold it?
Looks good!

I wrestled in school and enjoyed it.
The few times I tried boxing it felt strange, not tieing up or going for a takedown? I felt like a fish out of water.
But I do recall that the need to stay on the toes in order to react and move quickly.
My question is how long he can stay on his toes with the extra weight?
It would seem to me he would run out of gas before a lean guy? If his opponent kept him moving to wear hin down?
Actually, fitness is pretty critical unless you are in the “no weight limit” category. A fat middleweight will get his butt whooped.
WOW! Quite remarkable to see a man that big move that quickly.
How can this happen? It goes against everything thats been taught for a hundred years!
Yep.
It happens.
My guess is that even though hes big, Ruiz made better use of his training time.
Opportunity Costs.
Man, that other guy didn’t know what building he was in.
Wrestling is HARD1
Having done both, and not so great at either :), I will say wrestling is quite a bit more tiring in the immediate moment but doesn’t last as long (if no one gets knocked out in boxing).
how could it. It is EXHAUSTING.
But boxing is exhausting too. Especially if the fight goes 12 rounds (everyone here knows it used to go 15)
You are RIGHT. NO WAY this guy at 265 could have ANY chance against an Ali, who is too fast, a Klitchko, who was just TOO STRONG AND too fast or a young Tysen, whose shots to that soft belly would have killed him.
We are all pretty smart here. We see patterns in history.
How many FAT guys were heavyweight champs and for how long?
I gained TWENTY pounds and went from 200 to 220 when I was boxing and it felt like a TON.
Forget about it.

Big Country Roy Nelson- while not a champ- was a very good fighter with devestating right hand- He has been in many many brutal battles- weathering punches that woudl send the average person to the hospital- Everyoen htought he was a joke in the beginning- but learned he was the real deal- They even claimed he had outstandign cardio- and watchign his fights, one can certainly beleive that
[[(everyone here knows it used to go 15)]]
Back in the day- they would go till someone couldn’t continue any longer- some matches were well over 50 rounds, bare-fisted no less-
