Self defense tips and self defense training isn't something to take lightly. Just because you have one tool, doesn't mean you are done. Consider integrating martial arts, security habits, security systems, situational awareness (and awareness in general) and many other great tips to create 3 solid layers of self defense for women and men.

Most people - unless they are willing to practice hard - are better off forgetting about the martial arts. Invest in police-grade pepper spray instead. Fox is a good brand. It’s available on Amazon.
Home defense , rural area, police response time after midnight: 2 to 3 hours.During the day the response time is 1.5 hours.
1) Pellet gun rifle and led hand held spot light
2) 6 ft Staff
3) Shillelagh
4) Basket hilted sword ( very sharp)
5) Bennelli 12 gauge Nova pump with extended mag
6) .45 cal 1911 Remington handgun
7) .44 magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk
8) AR-15 semii auto rifle .223 cal
For black bears that try to enter the home or the porch deck, the shot gun is the go to defense. If Mr. Bear gets into the home, its the .44 mag.
Bears are the biggest risk, in the early Spring after hibernation and in the fall when wild apples are ripe om our land.
Other critters know how we handle bears...and they stay away. But then we are ready for them too if necessary.
You can’t live here without awareness.
Our security system is the crows who let us know when
there are critters about, they make an awful ruckus.The crows think they own the place because we give them our table scraps.They leave nothing.

Couple of guys I know (separately) went fishing in the Alaska back country. In both cases their guides carried double barrelled shotguns for bear defense. Why not a pump shotgun or a semi-auto?
One of the guides was asked that. “Two shots are all you’re gonna get”, he said. I don’t know if I subscribe to that. Just throwing it out there.
