Michigan Governor: Smoking Tons of Weed Could Fix Our Terrible Roads

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer threw down the gauntlet on Thursday for Michigan residents who are both sick of the state’s abysmal road conditions, and also not nearly high enough.

“At its height, the taxes for marijuana will raise about $42 million dollar per year for infrastructure. We have a $2.5 billion dollar problem,” Whitmer said at the Mackinac Policy Conference, referencing the state’s 10% excise tax on its newly legalized recreational weed industry—a portion of which is allotted for infrastructure repairs.

After explaining that she gets asked about using marijuana funds to fix the roads so often, she ordered her staff to crunch the numbers, Whitmer issued her challenge:

Every man, woman, and child would have to smoke about $2,500 of marijuana a year to fix our roads. And let’s be honest, at that level no one’s gonna care about the damn roads.

This is clearly not Whitmer’s preferred outcome, but hey, she’s raising the prospect.

Whitmer’s “pot for potholes” (her line, not mine) comments come at around 25:50 in the video below: (video at link)

In fact, when you factor out underage stoners, that number goes up to $10,000 per year, according to the Metro Times, which also quotes Whitmer using a similar line in a speech to the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce earlier this month.

Instead, Whitmer has proposed a $0.45-per-gallon gas tax to fund her state’s cratered roads—an idea that’s sure to be popular in the heart of America’s automotive industry.

So, there you have it, Michiganians: Either pay much, much more at the pump, or start getting super-duper stoned. It’s a real dilemma, but I’m sure you’ll make the right decision.

Didn’t they tell us the state lottery monies were going to fix roads?

No, that's suppose to be for the scrools...

...but your point is still valid in that regard also.

Meaning...(it's for "the children")...yeah, right.

Smoking it might cause more accidents on the roads, but if it’s for roads, I guess DUI (weed) will be okay...

Yeah, hash is probably a good comparison. Maybe not quite that strong but pretty close.

What a scam. It will go to pay off her cronies and the bloated pension debt.

would be too high to care.

the bottom line is govt wants tax dollars that they are losing from people not smoking cigarettes and a bonus is people become even more stupid and compliant AND they get to give raises to their favorite govt workers.....

and freepers encouraging them...

I call BS - quote one FReeper who supports high marijuana taxes.

Folks’ll care when a loved one gets slaughtered by a driver high on pot.

People are slaughtered by drunk drivers - is that sufficient reason to ban alcohol?

They should contact Oregon. It was reported on the news this morning that they allowed so much unregulated pot growing that they estimate they have a 6 year supply on hand.

I only tried hash once (around 1976) and it was too strong.
Other than that, the only drug I ever did was weed.

I’m not a fan of the stuff and am glad it was just a short stint of use for me, but I do consider it less harmful than alcohol. And I do drink. I’m a walking contradiction. :)

We just back from Colorado and their roads are amazing.

Here in S.E. Michigan the semi traffic is unbelievable and many of them are over weighted.........

I drive Mound Rd. and Van dyke in Macomb County almost daily (both of which would be considered industrial corridors) and my estimate is that 10% of the traffic are semis.......

The best quality cannabis is grown outside and it’s not complicated. You just need good genes, a bunch of good soil, rainwater and lots of sun. Pots are fine as long as they are fairly large.

Some climates are too damp and will leave your buds prone to mold. Worst case you have to cover the plants with a plastic greenhouse. That’s it

Sure, but my friend lives in Canada, not exactly the best latitude to try outdoor growing. Maybe you could get one decent harvest a year, but I wouldn’t even count on that.

You’re smart.

I sparingly tried the new stuff in the last few years. 2 tokes and your dick is in the dirt.
