Lesson learned: Stay away from 3rd World cesspools.
Interesting. Thanks for posting. I’ve been to Punta Cana, D.R. about 10-12 times with nothing but fabulous experiences. It could be changing. The last time I was there was about 10 years ago.
Travel to foreign lands.
Visit exotic locations.
Be beaten, raped or killed by the locals.
At least the family can excuse it by saying you did what you loved!/S
You have to be a fool to travel to foreign countries to try and take advantage of “cheap” expenses. You get what you pay for. My life and my families lives are worth much more than cheap liquor and salt water scenery.

I can remember Judge Wapner years ago asking more than one participant in his show - DID YOU BRING YOUR TV (your car etc.)TO THE SHOP?
Additionally - I can think of many other places I’d prefer for vacation - none would include the Dominican Republic or vicinity.

There is much more to this story than being reported.
This story has a lot of gaps to it.
I continue to be amazed at people who visit these 3rd world shit holes then are surprised when something like this happens.
Lone white female wandering around a resort in DR late at night = target of opportunity. She might as well have had a neon sign around her neck that said “attack me now”.
Uh-oh.
She may leave a 1 Star rating on Yelp!! “Was beaten and left for dead, would not visit again”. Poor dear.
Any place called “Majestic Elegance” located in a shithole, is not going to be majestic or elegant, and if it is, you will have a target on your back the whole time you are there.
I won’t even walk around alone on my block at 10pm. What ever possessed her to venture out alone in the DR. Poor thing.
Silly tourist. Would she have wandered around the streets at night back home? Probably not but tourists tend to take risks when abroad.
Visit 3rd World resorts ( last resorts?), win 3rd World prizes. Does anyone really think such places care for anything other than your US dollars? Ha!
One word: Bermuda.
I had this almost happen to me when traveling for business in the U.S. in the 1980s. Myself and the potential rapist were both white professionals. Fortunately, I had put the chain on my door, and when he opened it with a key, he couldn't get in unless he would have drawn attention to himself by breaking into the door. There were people outside who would have seen it, so he just made a bunch of excuses and left. It was a balcony room overlooking the pool, which is how he had seen me in the first place, entering alone with my overnight bag, and targeted me. He went to the desk, said he was locked out and was handed a skeleton key just because he looked respectable, which he was not.
Of course I called and had security come and escort me to a safer room, and management was apologetic.
Not that they really cared all that much about individual women traveling alone for business back then; no matter how we dressed, spoke or conducted ourselves, we were suspected of being hookers (that was also true within our workspaces, as #MeToo has finally made clear). But change has come about slowly. Most decent hotels and motels don't have metal keys anymore as a result of this kind of thing.
So it's not just third world cesspools; today we must reckon with what has happened to our country from human trafficking and drugs.
The woman in the story at the link took for granted that she, an upscale American, could venture out at night without her husband, and made herself a victim. Probably a high and mighty liberal who took her utopian presumptions with her down to the lobby. My hope is that she emerged a conservative—and a gun owner.
