In a former career there was this middle manager some of us called Mr. Macho. In private, we had way more derogatory names for the jerk.
Mr. Macho had some phobias. They were about snakes and lizards.
A co-worker of his when Mr. Macho was a guy on the floor knew about the phobias.
In the decrepit old building they were doing cable work in, the good guy saw one of those tiny lizards resting on some cables.
He asked Mr. Macho to double check some work. Mr. Macho got eye level with the lizard. Macho jumped back, left a shoe behind and hid in a closet for a few hours.
I’m not wild about snakes but have handled a few with handlers present. Otherwise I keep my distance if I see them.
Mostly what few I ever see are black and garter snakes. They are pest control and are welcome.
Two can play at that game.
“An encounter with a shark is one of my worst nightmares.”
I grew up sailing with my Dad on Lake Michigan, but VAST, open waters just make me INSANE!
If I can’t see the shoreline, forget it! Beau wants to go on a cruise, and I keep telling him to take his Sister because...I’m. Not. Going.
You want to SEE crazy? Put me on a ship in open waters. I’ll SHOW you crazy, LOL! There are things down there that see ME as food!
Nope. Nope. NOPE! :)
lol
Every single time I go in the ocean, I think about sharks.
EVERY SINGLE TIME
You do realize that the woman was not eaten, right?
And that probably happens fifty times a week in a resort area?
But you go ahead and imagine how much more virtuous you are than other people because you’re a freaked out moron who’s terrified of anything that moves.
Maybe a reef shark- in shallow water, or most likely a nurse shark— NOT interested in the swimmer whatsoever, no matter who is “interpreting” the intentions. Stirring up mud— bottom feeding.
A bit of info- for most Atlantic coast beaches (this is the Gulf)— there are always— always sharks of different types, out just beyond the start of the breakers. Surfers know this— they see them all the time. Why? Because that is where the bait fish are schooling and moving, and also being chased by other smaller predator fish the sharks like to feed on. Another point- sharks can only feed so much— but still will brush against surfers legs (down the lateral sensor line on the shark) and maybe nibble. Rarely do sharks come into the breakers because of the confusion of noise the water (and people) make. But— smaller sharks will and they can bite (sand sharks particularly).
If one want’s shark free water— don’t go in the ocean, and if in Australia- always swim inside the shark netted areas.
BTW she did not swim “directly over”. The dude filming it— irresponsible in any case. It clearly wasn’t the man- eater types— white, tiger, — the more aggressive known species.
Know the critters, and learn how to respond- short of carrying a bang stick.
Probably a nurse shark, interested in other things. We were just passing the other way.
Lol! Boy, are you dumb. I'm almost beginning to feel sorry for you.
Hey, Matt— we used to do that in fresh water, cutting holes into an old “skimboard” (remember those- went miles down the beach, throwing, gliding on inches of water over the flat sands). Really cool- flying underwater with bubble snorkel and come up for air when needed.
Cool video. And- you are correct-accept the ocean for all that it is, and realize we are guests, enjoy the ocean.
Found out from some crazy video about the “most dangerous” beaches for shark attacks— New Smyrna Beach FL... number One? As said on another post- we’d see sharks all the time out where we caught the forming waves— just beyond the breakers- where the schooling fish are. Beat, by far any percentage of the “attacks” there and many other locales. Had two porpoises play with us off Tybee Island— and the sharks kept away. Awesome!
LOL
I just read that great whites have recently been seen off Panama City beach. Yikes!
You’re so much more virtuous than everyone else in your own mind.
I wouldn’t dip a big toe into the ocean in Australia.
There is like 3 or 4 wayz to die that I find particularly horrifying. Burning alive, Drowning, Smothering/buried alive, being eaten by a bear/shark. Good grief.
