With kids these days able to simply glance at their phones to see what time it is, Jimmy Kimmel was curious whether todays young people even know how to read a good old-fashioned analog clock.
So for Tuesdays edition of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment Can You Do It?, the late-night host sent his team out to the Los Angeles streets to ask young people walking by to perform one simple task: tell them what time it is.
Times have changed a lot over the last 30 years. Even the way we tell time has changed, Kimmel explained. And it made me wonder if young people even know how to read an old-time clock anymore. You know, the round things with the hands. Anyway, we went out on the street and we asked people to tell us what time it is using an analog clock.
The results, as you may have expected, were not great. While one participant completely confused the big hand and little hand, another refused to even give the task a go.

We’ve all got time enough to cry.
Just imagine these calculator users trying to do real math on paper.
That’s the real threat to their futures, not Global warming BS.
Gee, another contribution by Americas Conscience
I’ve posted stories from my former classroom about the students not being able to read the clock on the wall. They are becoming dumber and dumber.
I might have asked before, but can A read a clock?
Or offing himself on his joke of a show.
10 years ago in college my son’s friend had a faceless watch. Another kid in the class asked him how he was able to tell time without the numbers.
In 10 years, the USA will have to import all our engineers from Guatemala
Oddly enough, all the vital data is still displayed in analog symbols.
You don't suppose...
Time is gone, the song is over.
Time, flowing like a river....
Time has come today....
Young hearts can’t read a clock anyway..
Time has come today...
“More cowbell....”
“Just imagine these calculator users trying to do real math on paper.”
My husbamd tutors some of the high schoolers in our church in math. He showed one girl how to “work out” the answer on paper. She was severely chastized by her teacher for understanding the process. (We believe the teacher couldn’t do it.)
It is VITAL to remember, whenever one of these dopey late night guys tries to show how stupid is your average person, that these average dopey people are from LA or New York City.
This is the real deal. I’ve been substitute teaching and when I’ve asked the time, I am sorry to report that many couldn’t tell me! (Jr. High?? Really!)
It is VITAL to realize that if they show that they can read a clock, they won’t be on TV, but pretending to be stupid brings them 15 seconds of fame.
“Does anybody really know what time it is?”
Does anybody really care?
