I can't handle it anymore. My curiosity has burned for decades about this, and I finally decided that hey, there's a thing called the internet so I can ask:
Why do between about 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 people insist on parking backwards, despite the fact that it's obviously MUCH more difficult. I always get stuck waiting for these people why they try over and over to straighten their cars out. WHY?
I can't detect any trend in demographics... young v old, north v south, city v urban, white v non-white, men v women... just a consistent portion of people who INSIST on blocking me for fifteen minutes while they park backwards! Please... I'll just presume you're someone who can do it in one move, every time and never cause massive jams in parking lots... someone just tell me WHY you do it!!!
So it’s easier to leave.....................
Why do people drive behind a car that’s backing out of a parking space?
Quick getaway.
It is much easier to back my truck into a tight parking space then to pull in forward. Also much easier to get out.
There was a parking lot at a former employer of mine where parking backwards made it much easier to leave in the evening when everybody else was leaving. I did it all the time in that lot.
To leave faster and without risk to hitting someone while backing up (making you the cause).
One of my relatives REALLY likes to find a spot to ‘pull through’ so as not to have to back up, owing to an old shoulder injury.
Some vehicles are easier to back into a parking spot ... for example, a full size extended cab truck. Some drivers find it easier to back into instead of backing out of a parking spot - especially when exiting the spot in heavy traffic.
It doesn’t take 15 minutes either. Unless the driver is an absolute idiot that doesn’t belong behind the wheel in the first place.
Really? It must take ten, twenty, fifty times longer to park backwards then they can save by parking forwards! Are they thinking they might just rob a bank while they’re parked in front of my (bank-free) building?
Easier to leave. When you pull up to a space at first you can see what will be behind you, then back in. Much safer then when you leave. I used to drive a delivery truck, with goods out the back.
To drive other people nuts.
Seriously- it’s safer. no more likely to hit someone backing in, and much less likely to hit someone pulling out.
I routinely do this at sporting events - Warriors games, 49ers games, A’s games. It makes getting out much easier in heavy parking lot traffic.
chill dude LOl
Some people have the skills to quickly whip a car in backward for a quick get-away. I pride myself in having that ability.
:)
Is it 1 in 5 or 1 in 10?
Or is it 25 or 6 to 4?
It takes hardly any more time at all.
Practice is your friend.
I back in because it’s safer to pull out instead of backing out. Many companies require their fleet vehicles to be backed in for the same reason.
Why would you park frontwards?
In most situations it’s inferior to parking backwards.
2) At work, people want to leave as quickly as they can after the whistle blows. Also, if a whole shift is leaving at once, it's safer. My company actually recommends backing into a parking space.
2) People that are aware that bad things can happen in public places always either back in to the parking space, or pull through if possible, so they are facing into the lane. Ever read Selco? He is a survivalist that lived through the Balkan wars. He always does this. Again, when you've got to go, you've got to go.
All that said, it might be a bit rude to do this if someone is waiting. But, what's your life worth? A little rudeness to others? Some think so.
