BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The renaming of a street may be the road to change.

Cottonwood Road in southeast Bakersfield will now be named South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

"There's a lot of energy and a lot of excitement," community leader and ShePower organizer, Arleana Waller said.

Waller grew up on Cottonwood Road. She believes the new name will change the areas negative reputation.

This is already a street you don't want to travel after dark. IMHO the MLK moniker will have a negative effect.

She believes the new name will change the areas negative reputation.

Yep, because it's worked so well in every other town.

Was initially PO'd about all the re-naming but realized LibTaints were doing something Normals could never get away with.

If all the warning lights on my dash are flashing, smoke rolling out the back like a Zero in a death dive, and sounds from under my hood sounding like a Jamaican steel drum symphony I. Will. Make. It. To. The. Next. Exit.

With the recent revelations about Dr. King, I think the Me/Too crowd will be wanting to change the name again before too long...

Naming a street “MLK” always changes things for the better.

Totally agree. Any street named after MLK is one you should avoid. I always thought it was a way for cities to slyly let people know where their most dangerous areas were while at the same time letting Black leaders think they were getting something from the “Man’.

So Waller believes the new name will change the areas negative reputation. Ah, no it won’t.

Why is it always MLK Boulevard? I’ve never seen MLK Street, MLK Avenue, MLK Highway... It’s always MLK Boulevard.

“The renaming of a street may be the road to change.”

As far as I read. What an inane, bleeding heart, naïve, nonsensical statement.

Knew it was a women who wrote this before checking the author’s name.

Same in my area....Wouldn’t go near that street if you paid me. If I drive through the area...I put my windows up with the hopes of deflecting a bullet.

Yep, because it's worked so well in every other town.

It's just like socialism - denying reality.
