Trial resumes today (Tuesday) after the Memorial Day weekend break. There are still updates to digest from "Dani's" testimony Thursday. She is the middle of three Mexican-national sisters that were involved in Raniere's cult. Her younger sister is the basis for rape and child porn charges against Raniere. Diane Lipson, correspondent for the Frank Report website, has written an extensive 8-part account of Dani's testimony [caution - graphic sexual descriptions]. Basically we learn that Keith Raniere weaponized sex and sex acts to use against his inner circle of slaves. We also learn that Raniere is really insecure about his manhood and he frequently can't get it up.
Through Dani's testimony we also found out Raniere installed a hidden camera in a kitchen to monitor his slaves' food intake. He liked the women very thin, probably unhealthily thin, and routinely instructed them to not consume more than about 500 calories a day. Sometimes less. In the house he shared with several of his slaves, he would "oink like a pig" when he saw them eating. Raniere was exempt from food limitations or weight loss efforts as you would expect.
The Northern District of New York (NDNY) prosecutors are under some pressure to do something. The Trump-appointed US Attorney, Mr. Grant Jaquith, is holding evidence against the NXIVM cult and Keith Raniere referred to his office from the EDNY. The EDNY is currently prosecuting the NXIVM trial. For twenty years the NDNY and NYS authorities ignored what they heard about Raniere and NXIVM, despite eyewitness accounts of abuses and criminal acts. Corrupt? Probably. Now the NDNY has a chance to redeem their reputation as many of the crimes cited as predicate acts in the EDNY trial's racketeering charges took place in the NDNY jurisdiction.
In his latest ruling, Judge Garaufis decided that two expert witnesses can testify for the prosecution. The first, Dr. Stuart Grassian, is an authority on solitary confinement and will testify about Dani's nearly two-year imprisonment. The second is Dr. Dawn Hughes. She is an expert on sexual assault, violence, and traumatic stress. Both experts have decades of knowledge in these areas and will no doubt beat Raniere on the stand like a rented mule. Raniere's lawyers were fighting to exclude these witnesses from testimony.
This morning, as Dani continued on the stand, she testified about her hacking activities on behalf of NXIVM and at the behest of Raniere. Hacking victims included among others, an accountant who worked for a former attorney for NXIVM, Dani's older sister Mariana, and even Clare and Sara Bronfman's father Edgar (with the knowledge of Clare and Sara). Edgar Bronfman's computer hack is the one that included correspondence between him, the Clintons and other politicians and world leaders.
Raniere and the other cult leaders scarred many people along the NXIVM path. One scar in particular that is now featured in the trial is a physical one. Dani testified that her younger sister, Camilia, got a scar when she was 16 years old due to an appendectomy. The defense is expected to try and cast doubt on the dates of illegal pictures Raniere took of Camilia. If there is no scar in the pictures, then they were taken before she turned 16. That's going to be a tough proof to sidestep, even for the Vanguard, purported 'smartest man in the world'.
