Green Bay Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr passed away at the age of 85, the team announced Sunday.

"We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr," the Starr family said in a statement. "He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome.

"While he may always be best known for his success as the Packers quarterback for 16 years, his true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor, and his generous spirit.

How Sad. One of the great QB’s. I will never forget his “Sneak” in the Ice Bowl. God Bless Him.

He did not have such an outstanding record at the University of Alabama so it is unusual that he was considered by the pros. But he was a phenomenal pro quarterback and a classy guy.

As a NY Giants fan, I can't tell you how much I "disliked" Bart Starr back in the 60s.
A truly great man - RIP.

RIP. I first heard about Bart Starr reading some old Junior Scholastic book about him by John Devaney that was in my fourth-grade school-room - I can still remember the cover of that book. I never got to see Starr play, but I knew since the fourth grade that he led those mighty Packers teams under Vince Lombardi and was the MVP of the first two Super Bowls.

I read recently that Starr still has the highest QB rating in post season play.

A Sunday School teacher too.

Frozen fields and fiery men. The NFL of the 1960s was a lot of fun and Starr was unforgettable. RIP, Bart Starr.

Also Starr to Boyd Dowler.

Starr was MVP of the first two Super Bowls. I no longer watch the NFL but those were great days.

85 years is a good run for any man, let alone a former pro ball player. That could mean he did things in moderation.

Disputing that theory is easy; just look at Joe Namath.
After all the excesses and indulgences, Joe will have his 75th birthday this friday on May 31st. So genetic also plays a role in aging. Joe just lucked out.

“I will never forget his “Sneak” in the Ice Bowl”

Grew up in Dallas, I was 9 and it is one of my early childhood memories watching that game. Bart Starr, what a great man.

That sneak was something...that was a game of the ages... Nowadays, the NFL would cancel it...for being too cold...
