Green Bay Packers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr passed away at the age of 85, the team announced Sunday.

"We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr," the Starr family said in a statement. "He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome.

"While he may always be best known for his success as the Packers quarterback for 16 years, his true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor, and his generous spirit.

Bart Starr closely affiliated with this organization for troubled youth.

He was a true gentleman on and off the field.

As a kid, my father and I were were standing in line at a McDs after my Saturday baseball game. On the East coast.

Dad told me to look over at the two guys in the other line, and said “That’s Bart Starr on the right.”

We didn’t ask for an autograph.

He was a sportsman. One who played the game to the fullest and loved the game he played.

Never watched a single game in which he played(slightly before my time) but I couldn’t watch a single Packers-Cowboys game in which he wasn’t mentioned fondly.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Starr. Rest in Peace

Lived in Green Bay during the golden age of Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke & others. Our house was less than a mile from Lambeau Field & whenever The Pack scored, the roar of the fans on TV was followed a second later by the actual roar near where we lived.

As noted, you’re getting old when your sports heroes as a kid are now dying of old age.

I read in another article that he suffered a severe back injury during a hazing incident at ‘Bama and did not play much his junior and senior seasons. Also, his stats in the pros the first couple years were mediocre at best. But that sure changed. He certainly was the perfect quarterback for Lombardi. Smart (called his own plays at a time when Paul Brown was still shuttling guards in and out with plays) and tough as iron.

Loved seeing play on TV. RIP.

I just realized that the lowest paid pro player now probably makes more than Starr did his entire career. Kinda sad.

Dad was a Packer Backer no matter where we were stationed. Are they still locally owned?

Frank Gifford did the play-by play for CBS.

At halftime he said he was going to have a bite of coffee.

Was a great QB and also a gentleman of the old school that is to never be again--

BTW both him and I attended Sidney P. Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. Bart in 1948-1951, me for one semester in 1964.

Yeah, Old Sidney P. was one the eight high schools I attended while being a construction brat growing up in the late 1940s through the mid-1960s.

One of my first two sports heroes, along with Carl Yastrzemski. RIP Bart. Thank you for your example.
