An upstate New York man was busted for driving with a crudely drawn fake vehicle safety inspection sticker, prompting local authorities to mock the creation.
Cops spotted the phony red sticker when they pulled over 35-year-old Manuel Muniz on Monday morning in Amsterdam, NY, according to WRGB.
The sticker, which had the words New York State Safety Emissions Certificate, tried to mimic the real deal, with a hole-punched January 2020 expiration date and a bar code drawn in black marker.
Muniz was slapped with a violation for driving an unregistered vehicle.

There was a time when I was barely getting by in an expensive northeastern state when I was younger, getting my car registered and inspected was probably the biggest financial setback I faced each year. It’s a pretty damn big deal when you come from a broken home and you’re just starting out.
That fake sticker is the wrong color. It’s too pink. The legal one looks washed out - maybe for a reason such as this.
The real NYS sticker is more of a deep red / burgundy.
Yes, I checked my car.
That said, it’s much better to not insult the cops by forging an inspection sticker. It’s better to leave the old stocker and let them know you’re broke, but trying to scrape the cash together. I was, more or less, but I was, at the same time, I was letting my inspection lapse into the next month each year, until I pushed my registration and inspection due dates were six months apart from one another.
Yeah, most cops aren’t human colorimeters... however, if they saw this going down the highway, they probably wouldn’t notice... the trouble comes when you assume they’ll never see it up close.
I had a friend who printed out a phony registration sticker when his car repeatedly failed inspection. It looked legit. I think he drove with it a couple of times but he then got paranoid and removed it.
I unfortunately live in New York under the criminal Cuomo and just having a warning light on is enough to fail an inspection. If your seatbelt light doesn’t go off after you buckle up they fail it. Now my car the ABS light wont go off which is a sensor for anti lock brakes. The car brakes work fine as do the anti lock brakes so it’s the sensor, but either I fix it myself which is a huge hassle or I pay a mechanic a ton of money to fix it otherwise it will fail. It really ticks me off because we never use to have any of this crap until leftists added 20 billion new regulations and requirements like a catalytic converter to prevent the “climate change holocaust”. Same with trucks. I drive a truck for a living. Now we have to add DEF fluid which is made of pee, urea - no I’m not kidding - because supposedly it reduces the evil carbon emissions to prevent climate change and already I got stuck in Conneticut for a day because the DEF pump broke. I think I cursed Al Gores name 10,000 times that day.
Like so many things today, NYS inspection stickers are made like crap. They often fade (from exposure to UV radiation) or come loose and fall off.
Actually, his sticker is better than what the DMV gave me for a driver license
they printed our a cheap, almost illegible computer copy...
(until real license arrives in mail in about 3 months, use this temporary license)
and then when I pointed out it didn’t include authority to drive my special vehicles, they just SCIBBLED that in pencil on the printout ! Didn’t even bother to re-print it with the required endorsement codes.
(PS: they also told me... when I had to travel 100 miles to get a license renewal appointment anytime earlier than 3 or 4 months wait..............that next time I should just drive with expired license...(!).... until any of the 14 local DMV offices get an appointment vacancy... ha ha...just try telling THAT to the cop!) ha ha.
Drive License renewal desperately needs to be put ONLINE!!!
or just issue the damned thing without need of renewing it all the time, damnit!
That’s sad. :)
In my misbegotten twenties I painted a registration sticker for my car with acrylic artist’s paint. The only thing it lacked was the highly reflective quality of the real thing so night driving was the riskiest. Got away with it for the whole year.
Knew a guy who was in Ethiopia listening in on Egyptian Air Force in Yemen. Came home to Cal. with Ethiopian license plates. Put them on his VW and drove for years. Cops assumed he was a diplomat.
I like the barcode
Looks like he wrote it after a few hours at some bar.
I don’t live in NY State tho’ I was born and raised there and know as others here don’t seem to that different states have different laws/rules re inspection etc. From what I’ve heard from relatives/friends remaining in NY State, what you say isn’t out of the ordinary..
I lived in CA for 50+ years and we didn’t have vehicle inspection and should have for all the clunkers illegals had on the road. Couldn’t figure out why it was never done. Emission tests once a year there for car registration could run into the hundreds of $$$ for failing a portion of the tests; prove the work was done to correct the problem and pay again IIRC. In GA where we retired it’s $20.00 per vehicle - no vehicle inspection requirement - only emissions.
Some humor here, relatives drove from PA to CA to visit one year and they drove on tires that weren’t legal in PA after an inspection. All the way to CA and back to PA and no problem with them. I understand even rust on a vehicle in NY or PA can be a reason to fail an inspection.
Professional job. Took a good eye to spot that as a counterfeit.
The only thing that would make this even better is if it was written in crayon.
How come they have to register it every year though, shouldn’t once be enough?
They want the money, that is the real reason for yearly registration.
