Americans Are in Desperate Need of a Lesson on the History of Slavery
American Thinker ^ | 05/24/2019 | William Sullivan

Democrat hopeful Pete Buttigieg removing Thomas Jefferson's memory from the public square and ending the practice of naming public events in his honor.  The legacy of Jefferson, he said, is "problematic."  "There's a lot to admire in his thinking and his philosophy," he said, "but then again if you plunge into his writings, especially his notes on the state of Virginia, you know that he knew slavery was wrong."

It's a stunning display of his ignorance, certainly.  But interestingly, Buttigieg has unknowingly pinpointed precisely why Thomas Jefferson should be eternally revered by our society, which believes that enslaving other human beings is wrong.

That is, that Jefferson knew that it was wrong at the time.

Thomas Sowell explains, brilliantly as ever:

Of all the tragic facts about the history of slavery, the most astonishing to an American today is that, although slavery was a worldwide institution for thousands of years, nowhere in the world was slavery a controversial issue prior to the 18th century[.] ...

Everyone hated the idea of being a slave but few had any qualms about enslaving others.  Slavery was just not an issue, not even among intellectuals, much less among political leaders, until the 18th century — and only then in Western civilization.

Among those who turned against slavery in the 18th century were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and other American leaders.  You could research all of 18th century Africa or Asia or the Middle East without finding any comparable rejection of slavery there.

In other words, these prominent men having turned against an institution that had been normal throughout human history was an expression of a revolutionary idea.  To imagine that the idea that slavery is morally wrong would be embraced by everyone overnight,

the idea of deportation was around for a long time

it should be noted that Patrick Henry was opposed to that, and didn’t think it was workable

Butigeg is a queer. Why would anyone care what his opinion is, when one of his infatuations is another man’s anus. I don’t care if he is a vet, he’s first and foremost a faggot.

The history of slavery in South America is also worth telling. Slaves in South America lived an average of 10 years, compared to 30 in the USA. Where is the condemnation of South America?

Most of the slaves imported to the Western Hemisphere went to central America, South America and the Caribbean. Only 5-6& came to North America. The future was made in North America and England, as far as the end of slavery is concerned. Blaming the Founding Fathers for the collective evils of slavery, is wrong.

In the case of Jefferson, the big word is about Sally Hemmings. No, he did not release her because if he did, she would have had to leave the state of Virginia by law and he couldn’t have helped her. So the world still considered her a slave even though she was not treated like one and was protected by Jefferson.

real life becomes complicated when Big Ideas brush up against it

The only solution the French ever had was the guillotine

Jefferson was known to ignore runaway slaves when he was assured that they were doing alright on their own.

According to “Slavery and Native Americans in British North America and the United States: 1600 to 1865,” by Tony Seybert, “Most Native American tribal groups practiced some form of slavery before the European introduction of African slavery into North America.”

Is anyone interested in that great advocate of slavery: FDR? Read the Yalta Agreement and the Morgenthau Plan.

RE: Most Native American tribal groups practiced some form of slavery before the European introduction of African slavery into North America

Well, why are these things not being said in the open:

1) Many BLACK FREEMEN also owned black slaves.

2) Many Native Americans also owned black slaves.

3) The SOURCE of the slave trade is AFRICA, where black tribes conquered other black tribes and the losing tribe were enslaved and SOLD INTO SLAVERY.

4) The Muslims were prolific slave traders.

Those who tolerate and support illegal immigration are the modern slave owners.

You're right.

And oh yeah, let’s talk about SLAVERY IN THE 21st CENTURY shall we?

In China’s system of labor prisons (formerly called laogai), millions of prisoners have been subject to forced, unpaid labor. The laogai system is estimated to currently house between 500,000 and 2 million prisoners,[21] And to have caused tens of millions of deaths.

In parallel with laogai, China operated the smaller Re-education through labor system of prisons up until 2013.

In addition to both of these, It has been alleged that China is also operating forced labor camps in Xinjiang, imprisoning hundreds of thousands (possibly as many as a million) of Muslims, Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities and political dissidents.

But yes, we trade with them for cheap goods.

In North Korea, tens of thousands of prisoners may be held in forced labor camps. Prisoners suffer harsh conditions and have been forced to dig their own graves[39] and to throw rocks at the dead body of another prisoner.

At Yodok Concentration Camp, children and political prisoners were subject to forced labor.

Yodok closed in 2014 and its prisoners were transferred to other prisons.

WHAT ABOUT BLACK SLAVES TODAY?

Well, have a look at this site to see a list of African Countries where slavery still exists today:

It’s interesting how the very people who decry slavery show no qualms regarding the Industrial Revolution’s working conditions of widows and orphans during that same period of time.
