IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries and that doesn't bode well for humanity
NBC News ^ | 05/22/2019 | Evan Horowitz

People are getting dumber. That's not a judgment; it's a global fact. In a host of leading nations, IQ scores have started to decline.

Though there are legitimate questions about the relationship between IQ and intelligence, and broad recognition that success depends as much on other virtues like grit, IQ tests in use throughout the world today really do seem to capture something meaningful and durable. Decades of research have shown that individual IQ scores predict things such as educational achievement and longevity. More broadly, the average IQ score of a country is linked to economic growth and scientific innovation.

Even children born to high-IQ parents are slipping down the IQ ladder.

So if IQ scores are really dropping, that could not only mean 15 more seasons of the Kardashians, but also the potential end of progress on all these other fronts, ultimately leading to fewer scientific breakthroughs, stagnant economies and a general dimming of our collective future.

As yet, the United States hasn’t hit this IQ wall — despite what you may be tempted to surmise from the current state of the political debate. But don’t rush to celebrate American exceptionalism: If IQs are dropping in other advanced countries but not here, maybe that means we’re not really an advanced country (too much poverty, too little social support).

... without going full time conspiracy minded, which seems to need control. Call it Ockham’s Razor, common sense, or plain cynicism, some folks need it.

It’s like, you know...memories, language skills, communication are maintained in cell phones and computers. Also, medication is given too freely for any minor complaint.

So we are like, you know ...Zombies;)

Minor, yes. But too often suffering is portrayed as noble, as long as someone else is having to do it.

I think the NBC Journ-O-List has stumbled upon the fact that facing some adversity breeds intelligence and cunning.

Whereas sitting around drawing welfare makes one fat, DUMB and lazy.

“Gee. I wonder what social and cultural phenomenon is ongoing in developed countries that’s causing IQ levels to drop?”

Seriously, there are a few things.

IQ is not solely based on “intellectual horsepower”, it’s also based on knowledge and skill. Knowledge of mathematics, and skill in reading in particular.

Since our educational system has discovered a way to spend more money while delivering a much poorer education, the knowledge and skills of our youth aren’t what they used to be.

Another important factor is the proliferation of screens, especially as used to consume video. I believe many young people today have a much harder time learning to read, because they know that in many cases they can watch the same story as video. Reading takes effort and concentration, video puts the brain into a sleep-like (or dreamlike?) state. It’s been shown that the more video a young person watches, the worse for his or her development.

Then there is “pop culture”. Ever since the 60’s it’s glorified ignorance and attacked intellect. Also, these days there’s so much pop culture content to consume, I’m sure with some young people it leaves little time or capacity for anything else.

Finally, there is the erosion of the American work ethic. Few children today are taught the value of hard work, and even fewer are expected to do any. It’s hard to excel at anything without hard work.

Just a few of my thoughts on the topic... ;-)

I have watched a few Judge Judy shows lately (I know, I’m probably the last person to tune in lol) and I have stumbled across someone names Maury, as well as Jerry Springer. I haven’t seen a complete show for either of the last two, but I have to say that when I see how unbelievably STUPID and VOID OF ANY SENSE AND MORALS people are, it’s a wonder either of our countries’ has survived. Unbelievable.

IQ is a measure of having a good memory and the ability to make connections between things in that memory.

I remember every Q drop and I connect them all together.

Now I am in the Oklahoma Home for the Criminally Insane.

When I get out, I'm changing my middle name to "Wayne".

Partner, we are spending more money in the U.S. than all other countries combined and yet test scores are going down.

There is a lot of home teaching going on and more families are opting out of the public schools and enrolling their kids in good Christian Schools and all of this is helping drop the test scores.

I was tutoring some 8th grade kids where our son was going to school and I could not believe the behavior of some of these kids going to this particular school. This was around 1998. I had to call out some of the kids outside of the class and had to reprimand them for the language being used in front of other girls. I laid right in to them and ask them if they spoke like this at the dinner table in front of your parents. They could not believe that someone was calling them out on the language being used.

Dumbing down curricula in an ill-conceived attempt at forcing equality of outcomes combined with an unprecedented wave of practically illiterate immigration would explain the totality of it in the United States.

But no, it’s got to be some sort of strange phenomenon, probably climate change.

These people are just stupid, they’re going to be the death of us all.

IQs have obviously dropped in Europe and North America. Previous generations would never have allowed such stupidity as open borders, crime, voter fraud, coup d’état, sexual perversion, public defecation, fecal covered streets, drugs, criminalization of truth, etc. Only the Stupidest Generation would tolerate such stupidity.

That is very true, and reminds me of one of my favorite James Monroe quotes...

"In explaining my sentiments on this subject it may be asked, What raised us to the present happy state? How did we accomplish the Revolution? How remedy the defects of the first instrument of our Union, by infusing into the National Government sufficient power for national purposes, without impairing the just rights of the States or affecting those of individuals? How sustain and pass with glory through the late war? The Government has been in the hands of the people.

To the people, therefore, and to the faithful and able depositories of their trust is the credit due. Had the people of the United States been educated in different principles had they been less intelligent, less independent, or less virtuous can it be believed that we should have maintained the same steady and consistent career or been blessed with the same success? While, then, the constituent body retains its present sound and healthful state everything will be safe. They will choose competent and faithful representatives for every department.

It is only when the people become ignorant and corrupt, when they degenerate into a populace, that they are incapable of exercising the sovereignty. Usurpation is then an easy attainment, and an usurper soon found. The people themselves become the willing instruments of their own debasement and ruin. Let us, then, look to the great cause, and endeavor to preserve it in full force. Let us by all wise and constitutional measures promote intelligence among the people as the best means of preserving our liberties."
