Wizard of Oz, Margaret Hamilton Wicked Witch Iconic Flying Hat from the Movie
Profiles in History Auction ^ | May 20, 2019

Lot 470 on page 123 of the catalog, Margaret Hamilton’s “Wicket Witch of the West” screen-worn hat from The Wizard of Oz. (MGM 1939)

Vintage original Adrian-designed, screen worn signature character hat constructed of black wool bunting fabric with a wide brim and an interesting supporting metal hoop. The hat measures 19.5 in. In diameter with a 13.75 in. Tall cone-shaped crown situated with a rear bias creating a 6.75 in. Wide brim in the front, which extends 5.25 in. In the rear. Includes a 20 in. Elastic chinstrap. The cotton fabric is sew on over heavy canvas. An instantly recognizable costume piece from the most famous movie witch ever portrayed on screen in one of the most beloved fantasy films in history, The Wizard of Oz. This hat is identical in materials and design to the other two versions we’ve handled, however, this particular hat is unique in that it retains the thin elastic chinstrap that secured the hat to Margaret Hamilton’s head during the flying sequences in the film. The audience’s very first encounter with the Wicked Witch was during the opening scenes when the terrified Dorothy peers out the window of her room to see Miss Gulch riding her bike in the whirlwind of the tornado that has lifted the house into the sky. Before Dorothy’s eyes, Miss Gulch morphs from the bike-peddling spinster into the wicked Witch flying on her broomstick. The come with a custom sculptured silicone display he’d in the terrifying likeness of Margaret Hamilton in her most famous role. The hat exhibits minor age and very slight seam separation between portions of the crown and brim. With 2-small spots of previous adhesive material on the underside of the brim. In vintage very good to fine condition. The consignor obtained this hat in 1970 directly from David Weiss, owner of the David Weiss Co., who held the legendary MGM Auction in 1970. A “Wicked Witch of the West” had was sold by Profiles in History in June 2010, Auction 40, Lot 805, for $240,000. Comes with a signed letter of provenance. The importance of this cinematic icon cannot be overstated. $60,000-$80,000.

Lots of Hollywood memorabilia including Oscars for Best Picture for Mutiny on the Bounty, a Superman Cape from Henry Cavill movie, Get Smart’s double revolver, the working customized carbine from The Man From Uncle, a double Colt Single Action with a single holster rig (why two guns and only one holster?), Andy Griffith’s Sheriff’s Badge from Mayberry, and a lot more in the catalog. . . But bring lots of money if you want to own anything. LOTS.

When I lived in Western, KS the city of Liberal had found a house which was almost a dead ringer for the one used in the movie.

They moved it to a site in the city and made a nice park. My Daughter thought it was great. The only thing they had from the movie was a model house which was used in the filming of the tornado.

Around 15 years ago, I bought Andy Griffith’s binoculars on eBay. I had actually forgotten I had them.

Ask millennials and they’ll think the Wizard of Oz was merely the prequel to “Wicked”.

It's amazing how Margaret Hamilton's performance in The Wizard of Oz was inspired by Hillary Rodham Clinton, when Hillary had not even been born yet.

There is a British auction house that’s auctioning off a bunch of British & Anerican film and rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia including a lot of Doctor Who items. I own an original Doctor Who costume given to me by one of the Doctors who was a friend so I’m good.
