Rotting Trash Piles Sky-High in LA, Attracting Rats and Raising Concerns of a New Epidemic

WHAT TO KNOW

Rat-infested piles of rotting garbage left uncollected by the city of Los Angeles, even after promises to clean it up, are fueling concerns about a new epidemic after last year's record number of flea-borne typhus cases.

Even the city's most notorious trash pile, located between downtown LA's busy Fashion and Produce districts, continues to be a magnet for rats after it was cleaned up months ago. The rodents can carry typhus-infected fleas, which can spread the disease to humans through bacteria rubbed into the eyes or cuts and scrapes on the skin, resulting in severe flu-like symptoms.

The NBC4 I-Team first told Mayor Eric Garcetti's office about the piles of filth in the 700 block of Ceres Avenue in October. At the time, he promised to make sure trash doesn't pile up like that.

The garbage was cleaned after the interview, but conditions have worsened over the next seven months.

The local entrepreneurs are just looking to build another “Hill” to compete with Beverly Hills on the local desirability index. Rusty Syringe Hill does have a really nice, exclusive ring to it. I want a place on the East side to catch the sunrises.

LA - America’s Mexican city.

It's probably worse. I was in Mexico City in 1975 and 1989 and never saw huge piles of garbage or homeless camped out on the streets.

One of many, many, many reasons that I choose to live in rural flyover country instead of any large city.

I clean up after myself. If my neighbor does not clean up after himself as long as he keeps his dump far from our property line then it does not affect me at all.

"It’s not garbage. It’s environmentally-friendly compost!"

It's a delicate ecosystem that are habitats of rare sub-species of rats and to remove any of it requires environmental impact studies by very expensive professional teams of university students. Then the compiling of bureaucratic reports followed by court cases before the order can be given to remove the trash in the face of eco-nut protesters.

When I was growing up, there were two ways to pronounce the city’s name:
“Los ang lees” and “Los an-gel-es”. You’ll still hear the first in movies from the 40s and the second became universally used starting in the late 50s.

And now it’s Los an-hel-iz like Spanish speakers prefer.

I began noticing it back when Dr Gene Scott had a show.
He often forced what seems to be the now-accepted style.

Even on LA local TV, they pronounce it Los HAN-ge-liz.

Probably started with Miranda Veracruz de la Hoya Cardinal

LA was once a beautiful and affordable place to live. Now it stands as a monument to liberal thinking, unnecessary poverty, health issues, rotting garbage and corrupt local (mostly democrat) politicans. Socialists, take a good look.
