Windows 7 support will end in January of next year, and that is a huge problem for both business and home users that are still running the aging operating system. Can't these people just upgrade to Windows 10? Well, yeah, but many just don't want to. Windows 10 has extreme telemetry that many people consider to be spying. As a result, they simply don't trust Microsoft's latest operating system. Not to mention, for businesses and organizations with many computers, the upgrade to Windows 10 could prove to be a costly affair.

Fujitsu sheetfed scanner that is incompatible with Linux, for instance (no driver available).
Used an HP scanner with Linux for many years.
Then sadly, the scanner died.
A good deal on a nice new Epson.
I worked with SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy ) until near insanity. Gave up and put it on a windows box.
Please enlighten us
They might have to get new printers, but so what? Printers need periodic replacing in high-density business operations anyway. Linux/Ubuntu printer drivers are the only significant hurdle I had to deal with.
I use Webroot but I would happily dump them for a group that offered support for my Windows 7 computer along with anti-virus.
My original Window’s 7 computer died some years ago and I found this one ‘used’ on Amazon. I have a 10 desktop and a 10 laptop and I don’t use either one...
If that were a viable business model somebody would do it. The reason Linux can is because it has a radically different business model.
Do yourself a favor and dual-boot that Vista-desktop. You can continue to run Vista-based software while you get your feet wet in the Linux world. That computer will run a heckuva lot faster and more reliably with a Linux disto booted.
Linux is a different world and if you want to keep good harware running securely for a long time it’s the way to go.
Installed a new 500 GB WD SSD and used Acronis to move everything off my old laptop to the "new" laptop. All of my apps, and even my stored passwords and book marks moved over perfectly using Acronis Universal Restore. Pretty amazing!
Will continue using Windows 7 and XP as long as possible, due to older programs that require it. I have the pro version with XP running as a virtual machine, which came with my original version of Windows 7. It also allows me to run Linux virtual machines.
The last time I made a HD upgrade, I had to re-register Win-7 with MS. This time, I didn't, which I haven't figured out why, yet.
I'm running half a dozen PC's with Windows 7.
Tech people tend think it tech terms: newer, faster, smarter is better.
Agreed. But office computers are now an appliance. You don’t typically replace a refigerator because GE stopped supporting the icemaker.
They don’t have source code.
BTW what is wrong with 10? If it’s the ui you can install the old win7 for task bar.
The Windows version should run on XP.
You can play with it, cost nothing, look before you leap.
Free and open source.
Thanks!
Thanks to 2111USMC for the ping!
Hi ShadowAce, here’s one for ya!
Which distro is that?
We initially blocked most of Microsoft’s phone home meta data from our firewall, but noticed tons of issues with apps not working if we did that. You can’t even register a font in Win 10 now without the traffic reaching out to Microsoft.
There needs to be an all-in-one installation package for Linux and associated software. That is, go back to the old ways, using installation DVDs or thumb drives, based on a checklist of just what you want.
In addition for the licensed stuff, you pay a fee for a tailor made set of DVDs based on your hardware and needs. And all you should need to do is insert disks and click OK, one after the other.
They would need access to the source code for windows and MS ain’t giving that up.
It’s Linux Mint with kde/Plasma. Those widgets are Plasmoids. The background pic has a bunch of stuff that accompanies it. Log in theme, Look & Feel theme, GTK2 & 3 themes etc. One of the few independent devs I’ve seen that does the complete package. Everything but icons and grub theme.
Linux Mint is discontinuing kde/plasma so at some point I’ll have to swap to a different distro that uses plasma. Either kubuntu or kde Neon
