Six people were unaccounted for Monday and 10 others were injured after two floatplanes carrying cruise passengers taking part in shore excursions collided in mid-air over Southeast Alaska, officials said.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Allen Kenitzer told The Associated Press that the planes collided near the town of Ketchikan under unknown circumstances.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios told the AP one of the planes carried 11 people and the other plane carried five. He added that the 10 injured were from the first plane and the 11th person was among the missing. All five people on the second plane also were unaccounted for.

“In a statement, Princess Cruises said the larger plane, a de Havilland Otter DHC-3, was operating an excursion sold through the cruise line and was carrying 10 cruise guests along with the pilot. The second, smaller plane — a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver — was carrying four cruise passengers and a pilot on an independent tour.”

“According to a statement from Princess Cruise Lines, the Otter was operated by Taquan Air, and carried guests from the Royal Princess. The second plane was an independent tour and had four Royal Princess guests on board.

“A statement from Taquan confirmed that one of the planes was theirs, and was returning from a Misty Fjords National Monument tour. It carried 10 guests and the pilot. Taquan has suspended flights while the crash is investigated.”

I flew with Bush Pilots many times. One told me:
There are Olde Bush Pilots.
There are Bold Bush Pilots.
There are NO Olde Bold Bush Pilots.
This was after we landed on a small lake
rather than fly thru a squall line!

Flew out of Ketchikan many times on business. Beautiful and sometimes hazardous.

the town of Ketchikan

By Alaska standards, Ketchikan is a major city.

Listening to the report on Alaska News Nightly right now. Nothing new, just details about which agencies are helping and history of crashes in the area.

If you hear the pilot' names, can you post them? I flew with some guys who left commercial flying to move to Alaska to fly float planes. 😔

Terrible accident. Condolences to the victims and families.

Haven’t seen what weather was like, were they late returning to the ships after a tour and someone zigged when they should have zagged?

Took some videos last trip in Juneau of these planes landing and taking off as we sailed thru there in May.

Never have taken a heli or plane tour or fishing excursion anywhere we have sailed. Camels and elephants are dangerous enough for me. The Tram ride is a good spot to get a view of the area as well.

I’ve been to Alaska once. It’s a beautiful, scary place. The wilderness is totally unforgiving and anybody there has to be hugely self-sufficient. If you get into trouble there, you’re going to be the one to get yourself out or not get out at all. A friendly ambulance that’s just a 911 call away isn’t usually there. Then, outside of Anchorage and a few other places, try, just try to find a full service state of the art hospital.

Just got the email on it. Right now nothing much other than there was a lack of situational awareness and not scanning outside instead of having your head looking at the panel.

Lived there four years myself and concur. Not in Anchorage but outside of Fairbanks, a survival kit in every car is standard up there. Most stunningly beautiful place I’ve ever lived, and I have lived in some interesting places.

Haven’t seen what weather was like,

I'm a hundred miles North of KTN but the weather all around Southeast Alaska has been sunny and clear for the past few days.

No Names release yet, that I have heard

“It has also been confirmed there are five fatalities from the independent air tour, four Royal Princess guests and one pilot," That would be the pilot of the Beaver

I’m curious. What was in the survival kits in cars in Alaska?
