Judge Orders Florida to Provide Voting Ballots in Spanish

A federal judge has ordered the State of Florida to provide all election ballots in Spanish starting with the 2020 election cycle.

The judge agreed with a group of voters born in Puerto Rico who said the lack of Spanish ballots limited their access to the polls and that the English-only ballots are a violation of the Voting Rights Act.

“Compliance with this Order is not optional,” wrote Chief Judge Mark Walker of the Northern District of Florida Gainesville Division, according to Fox News. “This Court will not hesitate to use every tool the law provides to enforce this Order.”

The judge also re-affirmed that people born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens and English-only ballots violate the rights of those raised and educated in Spanish.

Walker ordered that all primary and general election ballots must also be printed in Spanish starting with the ballots in March of 2020.

But the judge also praised the State of Florida for its plans to address the situation on its own. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Secretary of State Laurel Lee have already begun the process of providing Spanish-language ballots in all 32 counties in time for the 2020 elections. The government “should be applauded” for the effort, Walker said.

Walker noted that his ruling is meant to ensure that greater ballot access is applied.

Judges make laws?

They also can raise taxes. See what they did to Kansas City Schools.

The Supreme Court would vote 9-0 in the judges favor. Puerto Ricans do not have to speak English as they are citizens. The founders screwed this up when they didn’t put speak only English in the constitution.

Go back and read the article. These are not immigrants. They are American citizens.

I’m guilty of only reading the headline. I’m well aware of the status of Puerto Ricans.

All I said was if you can’t speak or read English then you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. I’m talking all nationalities period.. Only American citizens can vote anyway!!

I agree, but the founders screwed this up and the congress let this mess continue to happen.

Puerto Ricans did not acquire birthright citizenship until 1940; prior to that they were either naturalized or deemed as naturalized. I painted my comment with a broad brush and meant to include all who are distant and remain intentionally distant from American culture. You can narrow the scope of my comment to Puerto Rico if you like and argue the details, but at that point I will argue that Puerto Rico is a bilingual territory with English as a co-official language. I feel the broad sentiment in my comment remains reasonable and apropos.

How do candidates’ names differ between American English and Spanish?

Shouldn’t all those refugees from the PR hurricane be sent back home now? Seems they can’t communicate here.

All BS!

Native born, naturalized and natural born US citizens can vote. ....Foreign nationals cannot vote.

Get it. I just think Puerto Rico is put in the same category as Mexico a lot of times on here. Puerto Rico is the same as Alabama with regards to voting.

Thank you for the clarification.

I hope that PDJTs support among Florida Hispanics continues to grow.
