A man who weighs more than 900 pounds is set to be brought to federal court in Richmond on Monday, after the approval of a plan involving the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Richmond Ambulance Authority, the Henrico County Division of Fire, and state and local emergency personnel.
Kenneth T. Hicks, 48, of Emporia, who is charged in a cocaine conspiracy case, is scheduled to plead guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge David J. Novak and could be taken into custody immediately. On Tuesday, Novak approved an unusual transportation plan for Hicks sought by the government and his lawyer in an effort to protect his health, safety and dignity.
The arrangements could involve cutting through a wall where he lives, bracing the structure and even cutting down some trees.
Court papers show that the alleged conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute more than a pound of cocaine took place from 2013 into 2017.
At least three of the seven people charged in the conspiracy have pleaded guilty. Hicks, who has not been in custody, was allowed to make an initial court appearance via video link on March 21. He asked authorities for help to get him to the federal courthouse on East Broad Street in Richmond for Monday’s hearing.
A joint agreement by the government and the defense filed this week asked Novak to approve the transportation plan to get Hicks from his residence — he lives in a dwelling attached to the rear of a mobile home — to the loading dock of the courthouse for the hearing.

“How does one get to 900 lb weight?”
Would take a minimum of about 9000 calories per day to sustain that weight if the person leads a lethargic lifestyle. (This might also depend somewhat on the water composition of the body.) Just getting up and down to prepare food or use the bathroom would be a major workout.
There are calorie-dense food that would make it fairly easy to eat 9000 calories per day: alcohol, chips, soft drinks, desserts, nuts, candy, etc. By weight, fat is generally twice the calorie density of carbs and protein, but any of these can be a source of large amounts of calories.
Not without a lot of effort.

In order to transport an approx 800# male in need of immediate life saving treatment, two fire crews and 2 paramedics removed a section of wall adjacent to a door frame and loaded our patient onto a stake-bed truck using a TommyLift...We had no available ambulance that would fit his bulk...Thank Heaven he lived on the ground floor!
8 firefighters and two medics...It was all we could do to move the man...More help would not have been useful due to restrictions of space...The issue for us was not so much his weight, but how to rapidly move/transport him without injuring him further...Imagine getting a hold on a waterbed mattress filled with Jello?!
4 of us rode the back of the truck with our patient on the ride to the hospital...We did our best to protect/shield him from elements and preserve his privacy and what remained of his dignity; but I can only imagine what others who passed in traffic must have thought...
Once responded to a report of a morbidly obese female with chest pains...Examination revealed a partially eaten tuna fish sandwich between the folds in the area she complained was hurting her...Food had decomposed and an abscess had formed...No wonder she hurt...
