Broccoli, for years hailed as a cancer-fighter and a great source of vitamin C, calcium and B vitamins, is now being seen as a safer way to manage schizophrenia.
Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers say a compound derived from broccoli sprouts can help adjust the chemical imbalances in the brain that have been linked to schizophrenia. The vegetables high levels of the chemical sulforaphane could potentially be used as an alternative to antipsychotic drugs and their often painful or dangerous side effects.
Its possible that future studies could show sulforaphane to be a safe supplement to give people at risk of developing schizophrenia as a way to prevent, delay or blunt the onset of symptoms, says Akira Sawa, director of the Johns Hopkins Schizophrenia Center.
In a study published in January in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, researchers measured the brain regions of 81 people who recently suffered their first episode of psychosis. On average, those patients had 4 percent less of the chemical glutamate in certain regions of their brain, compared to healthy people.
For a separate study published in April in Molecular Neuropsychiatry, researchers found that taking two capsules of sprout-extracted sulforaphane daily for a week increased the average glutathione levels of human volunteers by approximately 30 percent.
Significantly, the volunteers reported only mild side effects, like gas and some stomach upset, as opposed to the involuntary movements, or shakes and increased cardiovascular risk associated with current schizophrenic medication.
Scientists say that while more research is needed, theyre encouraged by the findings.
For people predisposed to heart disease, we know that changes in diet and exercise can help stave off the disease...

Omg! I cannot believe someone else still remembers this!
HAHA!
“Broccoli is now being seen as a safer way to manage schizophrenia.”
Me and my many alter egos beg to disagree.
Three Faces of Eve? Ha! She was a piker.
I mentioned that to the local Farmets Mkt gal who grows all those plants and she said that is hogwash.
We eat tons of it. I guess I am “normal”
Hee hee hee!!!
Don’t care if it fights schizophrenia,
I don’t like the taste and we’ll never eat it!
He’s also dead.
Broccoli propaganda being foisted on us by Big Broccoli. Don’t buy the BS they are putting out. Next they’ll be claiming that KALE is a natural aphrodisiac. All designed to steer us to 3 servings a day. I won’t fall for their deceit and tricks. I’ll stick to my celeriliac thank you very much
I am a hyper taster and cant even go near broccoli (or dark chocolate). Fortunately am just schizoid, not schizophrenic.
Welp, guess I’ll live to 100. I eat enough broccoli to re float the Titanic.
If there is one plant that’s schizophrenic, it would be broccoli.
If it wants, it can be a brocoli or brussel sprout or a cabbage or a cauli. The ultimate progressive vegetable - plant it, and I have no idea what it will identify as after it sprouts.
watch out. That stuff on the bottom right
will give you a case of the cold robbies.
A Broccoli can helps?
But what about me, I eat fresh uncanned broccoli?
I don’t eat broccoli, and neither do I.
I use Pomegranate, Grape seed Extract, and Cranberry pills, Can’t handle the Sugar in the juices or the Acid Reflux.
