This list ranks the best movies about war, battles, and military conflicts. These films recreate some of the most significant events in world history from a variety of perspectives and with a variety of purposes and intentions. Some top war films attempt to recreate as realistically as possible the events they depict, either from an omniscient perspective permitted by historical study or from the point of view of the soldiers and civilians involved in the conflict itself. Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down, for example, was both praised in its time and heavily criticized for bringing a "you are there" sense of realism - and little outside or cultural perspective - to a recreation of the Battle of Mogadishu. The best war movies of all time differ widely in their handling of the subject matter, but they all strike a chord with viewers now and in the time when they came out.
Some of the greatest war films use war as a backdrop to look at larger issues - such as man's inhumanity to man or the crippling impact of post-traumatic stress - or just as a meditation on war itself. Still other films like Glory and Band of Brothers examine the personal drama of a few individuals, and mine it for larger insights about the meaning of war and the impact that violence has on individual human lives.

Well I can relate to that - was up two days straight and when finally getting to sleep nothing woke me up, I mean nothing.
He was a household name in some places.
Excellent movie.
miss that. Much better than Midway, IMO
While not an “epic” war movie, “Heaven knows, Mr Allison” was good. A great example of when Hollyweird produced a quality product with good actors. Deborah Kerr as a nun and Robert Mitchum as a Marine stranded on a Jap held island.
You should check with some of my old girlfriends. From what I could tell, it’s doubtful they were awake.
Which “Dawn Patrol”?
The Dawn Patrol (1938) Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone
The Dawn Patrol (1930) Richard Barthelmess, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
Dawn Patrol (2014) Scott Eastwood, Rita Wilson
Dawn Patrol (2019) Adam Cox, Andrew Truong
I’m guessing 1930 (IMDB rating 7.8) or 1938 (IMDB rating 7.6)
I imagine the recent remakes are real stinkers.
Definitely Bookmarked.
Absolutely brilliant. The writing, staging and performance are all perfect.
Errol Flynn version is my fave.
Just ordered Give Me Tomorrow from my local library. Thx ...
That’s an amazing story about Harold Russell. I never really thought about him like that before. Thanks so much for posting that little vignette. Very touching and that makes his performance even more poignant.
You have to wonder about the casting call and how Mr. Russell managed to get connected to the producers of the movie and the casting person. It’s not like a man without hands would be trying to break into Hollywood.
He gave such an amazing performance. Too bad he couldn’t find a way to make additional films.
The preceding paragraphs that I did NOT cut/paste.
On June 6, 1944, while he was an Army instructor, teaching demolition work with the U.S. 13th Airborne Division at Camp Mackall, North Carolina, a defective fuse detonated TNT explosives he was handling. As a result, he lost both hands and was given two hooks to serve as hands. After his recovery, and while attending Boston University as a full-time student, Russell was featured in an Army film called Diary of a Sergeant about rehabilitating war veterans.
When film director William Wyler saw the film on Russell, he cast him in The Best Years of Our Lives with Fredric March and Dana Andrews. Russell played the role of Homer Parrish, a United States Navy sailor who lost both hands during the war.
