The last nuclear base of the Ukraine
EnglishRussia.com ^ | 5may17 | team

Posted on 05/10/2019 5:54:13 AM PDT by vannrox

A photographer from New Zealand Amos Chapple managed to get to the territory of a secret underground nuclear base located 185 kilometers away from Kiev. This place is considered the last nuclear base of Ukraine: it had been functioning until 1991 when the country, following the collapse of the USSR, was deprived of all nuclear weapons.

Let’s visit the bunker from where the Soviet army was threatening to the west with intercontinental nuclear missiles.

In the Soviet time they could launch nuclear missiles in the direction of America from here, but now this place is free from weapons. However the base is preserved rather well.

The launching silo.

This place still creates a nervous feeling.

The main entry to the base does not attract much attention.

When you come down, you find yourself in a corridor 155 meters long that leads straightly to the control room.

The heavy metal door weighs 750 kg, so it can withstand a nuclear explosion.

The underground nuclear base was working since 1978 to 1991. It is ten storeys deep including launch silos. In a case of a nuclear blow it could autonomously maintain itself for 45 days. It was equipped with its own generator, all the personnel could be accomodated in bedroom and other dwelling premises of the object.

The control room with a red button! The chairs have belts to fasten a man on duty in a war period to keep him in the chair even when he’s exhausted. They say, that there were missiles SS-18 “Satan” and SS-24 “Scalpel” ready to be launched from here.

It is still in a faultless condition.

–nextpage–

The control panel is made in a recognizable Soviet design.

The museum exhibit: the sectional view of the nuclear base.

How is it like to be a nuclear missile operator?

If they got a command to launch a missile, two officers had to simulteneously turn the key (on the right) and push the button (on the left). Only four hands could make the system work – it was a prevention from someone’s crazy actions.

Missiles launched from here could reach New York within 20-25 minutes. Upon reaching the target, the warhead of a SS-18 missile would open and let a dozen of smaller missiles out to cover targets withing huge areas.

If a visitor wants guides could turn on the emergency signal or a missile launch signal. Just to hear the sound, of course.

The entire base was standing on powerful shock absorbers to prevent a launch of missiles or a spontaneous blasting in case of a nuclear strike.

All the doors of the object are heavy and thick.

SS-24 model.

–nextpage–

Full-sized “Satan” missile.

Recreation room for the duty staff 36 meters deep under the ground. Squeezed but pleased!

Fire guns storage box.

There are no elevators at the base.

They had all modern equipment! A microwave oven, for example. Soviet people didn’t have it even in their dreams then.

And a cute samovar!

“Stop! Back off! High voltage!”

Now it is not dangerous but once it could kill anyone who would incidentally touch it.

The secrecy of the base was maintained so strictly that even today, many years after, locals do not want to discuss it – cause it’s the secret!

“What to do, if…” instructions.

Remains of Soviet fighters on the base.

–nextpage–

And other military equipment.

The museum has opened just recently but it will probably be interesting for crowds…

These dual announcements raise more questions than they answer. The prominence of the individuals involved — Hunter Biden is the vice president’s son, while Devon Archer was a major bundler for John Kerry and also his stepson’s college roommate

Viktor Yanukovych vs Viktor Yushchenko

In 2004, as President Kuchma's term came to an end, [Viktor] Yushchenko announced his candidacy for president as an independent.

His major rival was Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych. ..."

The campaign was often bitter and violent.

Yushchenko became seriously ill in early September 2004.

He was flown to Vienna’s Rudolfinerhaus clinic for treatment and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, accompanied by interstitial edematous changes, due to a serious viral infection and chemical substances that are not normally found in food products.

Yushchenko claimed that he had been poisoned by government agents.

After the illness, his face was greatly disfigured: jaundiced, bloated, and pockmarked.

British toxicologist Professor John Henry of St Mary’s Hospital in London declared the changes in Yushchenko’s face were due to chloracne, which results from dioxin poisoning.[17]

Dutch toxicologist Bram Brouwer also stated his changes in appearance were the result of chloracne, and found dioxin levels in Yushchenko’s blood 6,000 times above normal.[18]

On December 11, Dr. Michael Zimpfer of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic declared that Yushchenko had ingested TCDD dioxin and had 1,000 times the usual concentration in his body.[19]

Ukraine Ousts Viktor Shokin, Top Prosecutor, and Political Stability Hangs in the Balance

By Andrew E. Kramer
March 29, 2016

Viktor Shokin, who was ousted on Tuesday as prosecutor general of Ukraine.

MOSCOW — Bowing to pressure from international donors, the Ukrainian Parliament voted on Tuesday to remove a prosecutor general who had clung to power for months despite visible signs of corruption.

But in a be-careful-what-you-wish-for moment, veteran observers of Ukrainian politics said that the prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, had played an important role in balancing competing political interests, helping maintain stability during a treacherous era in the divided country’s history.

The United States and other Western nations had for months called for the ousting of Mr. Shokin, who was widely criticized for turning a blind eye to corrupt practices and for defending the interests of a venal and entrenched elite.

He was one of several political figures in Kiev whom reformers and Western diplomats saw as a worrying indicator of a return to past corrupt practices, two years after a revolution that was supposed to put a stop to self-dealing by those in power.

As the problems festered, Kiev drew increasingly sharp criticism from Western diplomats and leaders.

In a visit in December, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said corruption was eating Ukraine “like a cancer.”

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, which props up Ukraine financially, said last month that progress was so slow in fighting corruption that “it’s hard to see how the I.M.F.-supported program can continue.” ...”

"Roughly two years after Hunter Biden’s appointment to Burisma’s board, the vice president traveled to Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, where he threatened that the U.S. would withhold $1 billion in loan guarantees unless Ukraine ousted its prosecutor general, Viktor Shokin.

At the time, Shokin was accused of ignoring corruption within his own political office.

But Shokin was also investigating corruption within Burisma."

Top Ukrainian justice official [Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko] says US ambassador [Obama-appointee Marie Yovanovitch] gave him a do not prosecute list

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko told Hill.TV’s John Solomon in an interview that aired Wednesday that U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine [Obama-appointee] Marie Yovanovitch gave him a do not prosecute list during their first meeting.

“Unfortunately, from the first meeting with the U.S. ambassador in Kiev, [Marie Yovanovitch] gave me a list of people whom we should not prosecute,” Lutsenko, who took his post in 2016, told Hill.TV last week.

“My response of that is it is inadmissible. Nobody in this country, neither our president nor our parliament nor our ambassador, will stop me from prosecuting whether there is a crime,” he continued.

In a Wednesday interview on Fox News' "Hannity," [Mar 20, 2019] former federal prosecutor Joe diGenova said that Yovanovitch needed to be removed from her position due to her actions under the Trump administration.

"The current United States ambassador Marie Yovanovitch has bad mouthed the President of the United States to Ukrainian officials and has told them not to listen or worry about Trump policy because he’s going to be impeached," diGenova said.

Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig

“Kostiantyn Kulyk, deputy head of Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s international affairs office, said that investigators had evidence that a number of Western figures, such as Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig, also received money from the Party of Regions, the party of ousted Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Craig was recently indicted for allegedly lying about his dealings with Ukraine.”

Disagree with what? I just laid it all out for you.

If I recall correctly, you are one of the misguided group that has a soft spot for KGB/FSB Putin, often defending him, no matter what the issue.

"...following the collapse of the USSR, (Ukraine) was deprived of all nuclear weapons."

Bet they are regretting that now, of course I can't really blame them, part of the agreement was the West promised to guarantee their defense in exchange for dismantling their Soviet era nuclear arsenal. Little did they know that agreement wasn't worth the paper it was printed on...

In exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons, Ukraine received financial compensation, as well as the security guarantees of the Budapest Memorandum.

I was just having some fun with you, as your post was very, very, long. I didn’t even look at the content.

As to Putin, my love affair is more with Russia itself. Since the Cold War, they’ve been right more than we have on international issues, and they definitely right when it comes to protecting kids from recruitment by gays. People tend to conflate Putin with Russia, and obviously they’re not the same.

As to Putin himself, I’d prefer a leader who was on less of a tear when it comes to arming up, but then maybe he’s worried about China and we’re too stupid to see the same thing. He also didn’t deserve all the crap the Democrats threw at him, as we now know his government did next to nothing to interfere here...I don’t mind the Democrats needing enemies around the world, I just wish they’d find one that CANNOT blow up ever US city with one simple phone call.

Pentagon says China, Russia developing satellite-killing lasers

FoxNews.com ^ | Feb 13, 2019 | PCmag

China and Russia are likely building high-powered lasers that can shoot down US satellites, according to a new Pentagon report.

Both countries are developing an arsenal of anti-satellite weaponry including missiles, cyber attacks, and "directed energy weapons," according to the US Defense Intelligence Agency.

On Monday, the agency released an unclassified report on the security threat to the US's dominance in space.

It calls out both China and Russia as two countries with the technological prowess to take down US communication and navigational satellites, which could cause mayhem for businesses and the military.

The threat may sound far-fetched. But not to the Pentagon; the agency's report lays out all the different ways Beijing and Moscow could attack US satellites in order to win future wars.

China, for instance, is attempting to become a "space power" that's focused on exploration and defense, according to the DIA.
