Some people ignore the warnings as they believe that consuming the innards of the large rodent is good for their health.

Some people are insane.

I learned long ago to always cook my marmot kidneys.

I like ‘em best with a nice Béarnaise sauce.

Marmot meat in Mongolia. Euphonious, but poisonous.

Ground hogs have moved into our area now quite a bit south of their former limits. Allegedly they had not moved here because the summers are too hot for them. Guess they have adapted in the last 40 years. I thought that was impossible and that all aminals would die of glubull warming. Wait, maybe it is actually getting cooler and the data is all made up or adulterated. Naw, that could never be.

Before I went to Mongolia in 2016, I had a physical and had to receive some vaccines. The physician literally told me not to eat or approach marmots.

I am surprised that this happened, although less surprised, given that it is an ethnic minority involved. The Mongolians I encountered ate everything well-cooked. They drink milk only if it is boiled in tea, or fermented and dried. I told my guide about the popular American snack of jerky, which is essentially raw dried meat, and she seemed disgusted by the idea of eating raw meat, even dried. While there, I ate goat, sheep, cow, and camel—all well cooked.

I blame the guidebook. I was trying to ask the way to the nearest McDonald’s but apparently the phrase actually translated to “I’ll have a heaping portion of raw marmot guts, please!” It turns out that Mongolia is the only Asian country not to have a McDonald’s. But, you know, they do have raw marmot guts, so there’s that.
