My friends there is such a thing. It makes you want to listen closely to the lyrics. My examples would be Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "From the Beginning". Then there's Elton with "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters." Yes-"I've Seen All Good People and Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley". It makes your ears work a bit but worth it. Funny how it's mostly 70's music.

Robbie Fulks is the best songwriter around IMO
Back in the driveway
The end of the workday
How fast that world disappears
A fresh lawn, a pine tree
A neighbor just like me
Who’s worked all his life to get here
A man climbs as high as he can
But his heart belongs where it began
I can see in my mind’s eye
A shack on a hllside
A mean billy-goat on a chain
And Dad doing battle
With dirt hard as gravel
And summers the crops never came
We’d shoot down a pheasant in flight
And sing songs about Jesus all night
That’s where I’m from
Where time passes slower
That’s where I’m from
Where it’s yes ma’am and no sir
You can’t tell I’m country
Just you look closer
It’s deep in my blood
Two cars, a picket fence
That’s where I’ve come
Dirt roads and double-wides
That’s where I’m from
Night school on a fast track
And no cause to look back
That place put a scar on my soul
And I swore my young ones
Would never know hunger
The good life is all they can know
Well, I’ve watched them grow, now I see
One thing separates them from me
Yes! I had both Journey To The Center Of The Earth and The Six Wives Of Henry The Eighth back when they came out.
Have you checked out Ant Phillips’ solo records, some good stuff on them. Phil and Mike played on a few songs.
And then there’s Hackett’s “Voyage of the Acolyte.”
Far out, man...
See progressive music you called it.
Can anything progressive be good? I say NO.
The Ghost And The Geese is one of the greatest albums ever recorded!
For really far out try Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother and Umma Gumma...
Trespass is a fantastic album, even though it was before Phil and Steve joined.
I do love Today's Tom Sawyer. When it comes on and I'm driving, I have to turn it up very loud.
Saw Tull at the Fillmore east in 69. Good show.
I like This Was and Benefit. And some of Aqualung and Thick.
Yep, great album...I love stuff like White Mountain and The Knife. Trespass and Nursery Cryme are my two favorite Genesis albums.
Not the biggest ELP fan, but the song “Trilogy” is one of the most awesome songs ever done.
I found an interesting Jazz-tinged interpretation here...

I love Reelin’ in the Years. I always smile when he says, “You’ve been telling me you’re a genius since you were 17. In all the time I’ve known you I still don’t know what you mean.”
You are thinking of a different song.
Rock and Roll Music” is a 1957 hit single written and recorded by rock and roll star Chuck Berry. The song has been widely covered and is recognized as one of Berry’s most popular and enduring compositions.[3] In the fall of 1957, his recording reached number 6 on Billboard magazine’s R&B Singles chart and number 8 on its Hot 100 chart.[4]
Benefit is one of my lifetime favorites. That one and Stand Up are easily my two best.
“That’s not racket, that’s Brahms....Brahm’s Third Racket!” - Basil Fawlty
There’s no doubt Phil is a better drummer than John Mayhew, but Ant Phillips is right up there with Hackett in guitar virtuosity.
But I stand by my total disinterest in lyrics. I dont read poetry either.
Great lyrics stand out like skyscrapers.
A few of my favorite lyric sets ...

Gentle on My Mind — Glenn Campbell
Deep Purple -— Nino Temple and April Stevens

I’ve seen Al Stewart live a couple of times in recent years, and he’s still great. He also continued releasing indie albums after the majors dropped him, and they’re brilliant. Albums like “Between the Wars,” “Down in the Cellar,” “Sparks of Ancient Light” and “A Beach Full of Shells” not only contain some of his best songs ever, but better songs than I’ve heard from any younger artists in the past 20 years.
