Mary Magdalene suffers from a miscast Joaquin Phoenix, drab visuals, and a muddled message.
Actors love to think they can play anything, but the job of any half-decent filmmaker is to tell them when theyre not right for a part. If the Rock wants to play Kurt Cobain, try to talk him out of it. Adam Sandler as King Lear is not a great match. And then theres Joaquin Phoenix. Hes playing Jesus Christ in the new film Mary Magdalene.
In certain situations, Phoenix is a capable actor. I believe he would excel as a meth head, or as a self-hating DMV clerk (possibly with a meth problem). He may make a superb Joker. But Joaquin Phoenix as the Prince of Peace? Heres a fact the makers of Mary Magdalene seem unaware of: Jesus Christ attracted people to himself. He caused them to love him, listen to him, want to follow wherever he led. One glance at Joaquin Phoenix being morose and anguished and weirdly sinister and the people of Judea would not have said, Tell us more, teacher. They would have dialed IXII.

He was raised in the Children of God sex cult. There was a tactic used called ‘hooking for Jesus’. Rose McGowan also was brought up in it.
Evidently the screenwriter(s) were ignorant of the fact that Mary Magdalene was only one of many female followers of Christ.
OK that one made me LOL
Well written piece.
Jeffrey Hunter and Max von Sydow were also miscast. Jim Caviezel came close. But the perfect Jesus was in Ben Hur. The one with Charlton Heston. Ben Hurs Jesus was the only way he could be portrayed. With mystery and leaving the audience to picture Him as they saw Him. Movie genius.
Casting is 90% of making a good movie.
..totally agree--always thought so too...
ROTFL!! Yeah... gotta say, he was creepy even as a child. Remember Parenthood?
Films about Jesus the Christ are generally done by people who spend their lives not following Jesus the Christ.
Agreed. It is the only portrayal I can tolerate.
I read the book, as well as saw the movie many times.
It deserved its 11 (as I recall) Oscars. I own the score on CD, and the film on DVD.
Agree with you all. Most epic Epic ever made. I love Ten Commandments, but BH is much less campy and much better. Still don’t understand why Haya Harareet did not get an Oscar. I thought she carried the movie. She was also absolutely not guilty.

Penny needs the talk that Mary Magdalene got about love thy neighbor too much.
I have always thought The Gospel of John (2003) was quite special and moving.
