(CNN) — It took awhile, but the effort to rid a Georgia stream of its offensive name has finally succeeded.

Runaway Negro Creek, a small waterway on the state's Skidaway Island near Savannah, has been officially renamed Freedom Creek.

The US Board on Geographic Names, which maintains uniform usage of place names throughout the federal government, voted to OK the name change during a meeting last week.

The move to change the name gained momentum last year as people complained it was culturally insensitive.

It also highlights a small piece of history. The original name dates back to at least the Civil War, when it's believed escaped slaves from a nearby plantation would swim across the creek to freedom on islands controlled by Union troops, CNN affiliate WJCL reports.

When I was young, we stocked N*****head Oysters at our store. They sold well, to folks of all races. They changed the name to Negrohead Oysters in the ‘60’s, I think.

Well, I can kind of see that. It’s sort of a glib-sounding name, like it’s funny. At least it’s not a big river that everyone knows except the locals.

Yeah, it used to be called: Chump N-word News. So they had to change it to the abbreviated CNN.

There was a "Ni**erhead Creek" in the Cascades, Washington State which was a slang term for a steam powered logging winch - we used to hunt nearby. It was changed to Yellowjacket Creek back in the 60's.
There was also a "Bear sh*t Lake" near the Olympic Mountains and was labeled on the map as such. I think it's been changed also.

Yep go back in history prior to the mid 1900s and you’ll find
all kinds of things from food, roads, landscapes, water ways,
etc with a similar name across the country and not just the south.
