Dress code for parents? Mom says school turned her away because of her outfit

Usually it's students who find themselves fighting against school dress codes, often labeled as sexist, racist or just plain unfair.

The roles were reversed for a mother of a high school student in Houston who told NBC affiliate KPRC that she was unable to register her daughter because school officials asked her to leave the property due to what she was wearing.

Joselyn Lewis was wearing a T-shirt dress featuring a picture of Marilyn Monroe and a headscarf when she she was trying to enroll her daughter in the school and an unidentified administrator at Madison High School asked her to leave.

"She went on to say that she still couldn't let me on the premises because I was not in dress code and I still didn't understand what that meant," Lewis told KPRC. "She said that my headscarf was out of dress code and my dress was too short."

Lewis had just come from Lamar High School, where her daughter was previously enrolled, and said she did not have an issue there.

"I mean, I didn't understand why my headscarf and my dress would conflict with me enrolling someone in school,'' she said.

That woman’s dress isn’t that short.

That isn't a dress. It's a t-shirt.

Sheesh, I blush to think about what I wore in the ‘60s.

I'm sure you wore it far, far better than this young lady.

Church on a summer day can be surprising as well. They don’t teach modesty or decorum any more.

Quite possible.
****
Eight or nine kids playing in the yard were discussing birthdays. All were born around same days in March of same year, with exception of Leroy who was born two months later. When asked why his B/D was not like theirs he replied, “Mom didn’t go to that party”.

She’s wearing flip flops, a headscarf and what looks like a T-shirt for a bathing suit coverup-I guess she just stopped by to enroll the kid in school on her way to the beach...

Anyone else notice all the black women wearing Marilyn Monroe shirts over the past couple years?

In the video, she comes across as nice.

She shouldn’t have appeared on the news - which makes matters worse.

But, she’s right - the school should’ve signed up her daughter.

Nothing wrong with a headscarf. As for the dress, there are far shorter dresses out there. I’ve seen parents in all types of dress at youth/school events - for example, once a mother in a nightgown and slippers - another time a mother with a neckline to her waist - and so on.

She thinks she did. Does this manner of dress suggest that to her enrollment is not a significant day in her daughters life?

Beats me. Seems so. But then maybe the teach was showing her splendid breasts and matching tighter than silk stocking reveal all leotards sans panties. You get everything at public screwls these days.
