Crappy movie...sorry
I agree. It was a beautifully photographed bad movie with bad writing and a bad story that was left lacking at the end.
It should have had a triumphant feeling at the end and instead it was somber and defeatist...just like the liberal historical revisionists who created it.
Wow.
I felt exactly the opposite after watching it.
Dunkirk was a low point for the British army. They were defeated, and were on the verge of being wiped out. But, normal everyday citizens came to their rescue, and evacuated them from the beaches. It was a somber event, and helped galvanize the British, along with Churchill’s speeches, in stopping Hitler.
The part of the pilot landing on the beach was stupid, however.
There were two movies about Dunkirk released nearly the same time? Were any of them good, both bad, or?? I’ve seen neither but don’t want to watch another “Battle of the Bulge”
Tom Hardy and Spitfires.
Great movie.
I can not find the film sequence from Murphy’s War called “1st Flight” A crappy movie that grips my soul to this day..
“Fly you bastard! fly!”
Many people call that reality; please count me among them. The triumphant feeling occurred later on V-E Day.
The choice that Nolan made to superimpose the different time frames of the three story lines (The Beach (1 week), The Civilian Rescue (1 day), and the Fighters (1 hour)) probably confused a lot of viewers who are more accustomed to linear timelines. This is classic Chris Nolan who loves to play games with the perception of time as he did in “Inception” and “Interstellar”. I you love the craftsmanship and imagination of this approach as I did you will love the movie. If you want a more conventional, good vs. evil narrative with good riding off into the sunset at the end then “Dunkirk” the movie wouldn’t be your cup of tea. The actual “Dunkirk” rescue was a desperate attempt by Churchill to save whatever he could of the British army from their spectacular incompetence at the start of the war. Fortunately, Hitler also demonstrated his incompetence by not pressing the air war and eliminating the British on the beach when he had them pinned down. For that mistake and others he thankfully paid the ultimate price but only after getting about 50 million people killed.
I have that one, from 2017, and an earlier Dunkirk from 2004, and an even earlier one from 1958.
They're all very good, and well worth watching more than once or twice.
There was no triumph at that point. The British army had gotten their asses well kicked and now they knew this was going to be a tough war. Sure it was a great display of civilian participation, but that only had to happened because of how badly the war was going.
This is an interesting WWII story I saw yesterday.

Spitfire pilot Peter During was shot down behind enemy lines and convinced his German captors to become his prisoners.
Thanks for posting! I saw Dunkirk in the movie theater with my son. Just watched the two YouTube Dunkirk dogfight scenes on my big screen — both are great. Just heart-pounding watching that and thinking of those brave men who fought knowing they had a life expectancy of 30 days.
I thought the music there was Gentle Giant, haven’t played the old records lately. Then I found out it was a band called Camel.
I have done lots of things in my time, thought I was gonna die lots of times, sometimes for weeks on end. Managed to slip the wire, but it was NEVER pretty.
