Tom Hardy and Spitfires.
Great movie.
The choice that Nolan made to superimpose the different time frames of the three story lines (The Beach (1 week), The Civilian Rescue (1 day), and the Fighters (1 hour)) probably confused a lot of viewers who are more accustomed to linear timelines. This is classic Chris Nolan who loves to play games with the perception of time as he did in “Inception” and “Interstellar”. I you love the craftsmanship and imagination of this approach as I did you will love the movie. If you want a more conventional, good vs. evil narrative with good riding off into the sunset at the end then “Dunkirk” the movie wouldn’t be your cup of tea. The actual “Dunkirk” rescue was a desperate attempt by Churchill to save whatever he could of the British army from their spectacular incompetence at the start of the war. Fortunately, Hitler also demonstrated his incompetence by not pressing the air war and eliminating the British on the beach when he had them pinned down. For that mistake and others he thankfully paid the ultimate price but only after getting about 50 million people killed.
