Today’s Cryptogram

U POUQON CF IDO SXI TDISF BXO SUE, HIOF BXO SUE UDQ FXISF BXO SUE. --VIXD R. KUJSOPP

You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications, unfortunately they are copyrighted so we can't use them here. So, we're just going to make up our own.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter.

For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles as puzzle solvers love to hear how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram.

TOPICS: Chit/Chat
KEYWORDS: brain; cryptogram; puzzle; todayscryptogram
Solving the puzzle under 8 minutes is good, under 6 very good, under 4 excellent and under 2 "you're a pro!"

Those of you looking for an added challenge can try to solve one sentence or even one word at a time, i.e. solve the entire first line, then go to the second line etc.

If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hal’s Helper below:

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper.

I got the first name of the author of the quote, then I solved it. Usually the other way around. Didn’t time myself this time. But once I got that first name it went faster.

Short quotes which don’t use many letters in the alphabet provide a little extra challenge. I got fixated on “Love is a serious dental misease” (left it for a few minutes, got past the funny thought)

I think I would start with double letters. Which letters are most often doubled in a word? OO LL NN EE MM PP That would give you the first letter in a word with a double letter. The game would require more time than I have.

You might also look for common digraphs, like TH CH PH. Repeated examples two letter pairs are revealing. In today’s example the paired words “BXO SUE” occur thrice. Should be a dead giveaway for BXO and it is.

The middle initial requires a guess if you don’t know the author (who does?). The author’s last name can be inferred if you look at the 10 remaining letters after the quotation is solved. I think there s only one combination of two letters that returns a common Anglo surname. So I think this a fair puzzle.

About 4 minutes. I had a false start with a wrong assumption about the first 3 letter word. And I had to google the author. I like this saying, though!

About an hour. I took a guess at the first name, and the rest flowed from that.
