Rovell: AAF Suspending Football Operations Immediately, League’s Future Now in Doubt
Action Network ^ | April 2, 2019 | Darren Rovell

Just eight weeks after playing its first games, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) will be suspending football operations by the end of Tuesday, according to sources.

Tom Dundon effectively bought a majority stake in the league in mid-February, with the league announcing his commitment of $250 million. It later became clear that Dundon, who owns the Carolina Hurricanes, was funding the league on a week-to-week basis, with his approximate total commitment being $70 million to this point.

After the deal with Dundon, sources say it became clear to league co-founders Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian that Dundon’s objectives were different from the original plan.

From what I saw it was far better than the NFL

Not really surprised.

Typically, only one game per week is on my cable tier, and it is teams I have near-zero interest in.

Some games can be found online, but it takes some dedication to search them out.

The few games I have watched has very low attendance.

I also find it rather silly to omit kick-offs and PATs, leaving the only ‘kick’ on 4th downs.

So is a colonoscopy performed by a deat rat. So is screwing a porcupine, or hurling ones self into an active volcano. I could go on.

Why invest in a sport dying from brain injuries? Football is on borrowed time.

Ask Vince McMahon. He's next up.

It seems like Orlando and San Antonio were the only cities that supported their teams. Hard to make a league work that way.

What the NFL doesn’t admit is that there are no further viable markets for NFL franchises other than non-U.S. cities like London, Toronto and Mexico City. They’ve tapped out the United States.

I think it is very possible the NFL will next try to expand to London and Mexico City. Toronto would be viable but it would probably kill the CFL if they did it.

They already tried the World League, and that didn’t work.

World League of American Football.
ESPN’s Chris Berman used to call it the WE-LAF

Right. This would not be that.

Scheduling a London-based team would be tricky but could work. Mexico City might offer security concerns but is otherwise not a long flight involving major time zone changes.

I think you’d have to schedule London home games in multi-week blocks and use the bye weeks plus weeks 1 and 17 to minimize any disadvantage to travelling teams. Hosting a playoff game might be a nightmare though.

This is a real bummer. I have watched several of the AAF games since their season started and the games were pretty decent. It certainly helped this football junkie’s withdrawal symptoms that normally start just after the Super Bowl.
I jokingly call that time period from the Super Bowl to the start of baseball season “the dark time”. Thanks for getting me through it, AAF. Needless to say, I am not a basketball fan. At least baseball season has started. I have that and the PGA to satisfy my needs.

I've noticed the highlights of each game popping up on the Roku YouTube app -- I wonder if the league implemented or thought about having their own streaming channel on Roku and the other streaming boxes? Oh, and Manziel got knocked out (concussion) in his second game with that league. Thanks C19fan.

Agree. The NFL could contract to 28 teams, easily. Their big problem now is that there aren't any more cities willing to foot the bill for stadiums. When the Chargers showed up in LA like a party guest that shows up a half hour after you've turned off the porch light and sent everyone home, it revealed there aren't any more markets in the US. Teams in foreign countries would create a whole other batch of headaches for the league.

Toronto would be viable

Canadians are fiercely nationalist when it comes to sports.
While Buffalo plays occasionally in Toronto, starting a franchise there would invite massive boycotting.
