Its true that the Alliance of American Football may not make it to Year 2. Its also true that the AAF may not make it to Final Four weekend. Per a source with knowledge of the leagues plans, games will be played this weekend, Week Eight of the inaugural season. Beyond this weekend, however, its entirely possible that the plug will be pulled.

"The problem arises from the upstart leagues inability to come to an agreement that would result in certain NFL players being available to the AAF. The NFL is willing to allow players who sign "futures" contracts after the conclusion of a given season to play in the AAF. The NFL Players Association has not yet agreed to the terms of what would amount to a modification of the labor deal between the NFL and the players union."
Eh? Sounds a lot like the NFL thinks they own the players.
Didn’t we fight a rather bloody war to end slavery?
The only thing I’ve ever heard about this league is that at some point in the “take a knee” thing, someone said another league may start up. Is this it? Man, that happened fast.
Not really, the war began because the South demanded States’ rights and were not getting them. Slavery was part of it but not the cause of it.
I’ve watched several games. Entertaining,
They have a mike on Steve Spurrier, coach of Orlando Apollos. He’s a trip, always liked him.
Several different rules, faster game, no kickoff, 5 defensive rushers max.
Hope they make it.
I haven’t watched an NFL game since the knee crap started couple yrs. ago.
Keeping the slaves was a key factor for the southern economy and the defining right that they desperately needed to run large plantations in a pre-industrial era.
Yes, we would be a better country to live in if states’ abilities to self-govern were not lost in that conflict.
Don’t try to school me on this, I ain’t no Damn Yankee, I went to Jefferson Davis Jr. High, way back when. Do the math.
Here’s a thought experiment...
If the colonies had not revolted in 1776, slavery would have ended by act of Parliament in 1833, when it did for all of the British Empire. Would The South have been forced to revolt at that point? The perception was they could not survive without slave labor. What other choice could they see? How long would The South be able to fight the not just the north, but the entire British Empire?
What would The South look like today after that?
Fans need a NEW league, not a faux NFL.
Its not much better than college football. But I would still like to see a decent d league model for football.
Really? You are gonna start this argument on a football thread? Give it up.
I’ve enjoyed the league also so far. Go Orlando.
It has a feel of football like it used to be.
Rough around the edges, simpler, and some of the skills are not on the same level as the NFL but very entertaining.
As stated, slavery was part of it but not the cause of it.
You state: If the colonies had not revolted in 1776, slavery would have ended by act of Parliament in 1833, when it did for all of the British Empire.
Speculation at best. Irrelevant regardless.
You have no idea if that would have happened or not nor do you have any idea or anyone else for that matter if the South had won.
History is what it is and can’t be changed, unless you’re a liberal and want to wipe it out which still changes nothing.
“Hypotheticals” s and “What if’s” only work for deciding a path for future events.
I didn’t bring it up I just commented on it.
As for the AAF it was probably a failure from the start because the NFL would try to kill it one way or another if started to become successful. I’ve watched a few games but wasn’t impressed which may be a result of the NFL turning me off as well.
Oh...I thought the AAF will be expanding. You tube has someone who said the next 10 cities are AAF expansion cities.
Still, fun to speculate...
...and hypotheticals allow us to imagine the consequences of each of our planned current actions and better decide a wise a path for future events.
The inability to foresee even the most obvious of consequences of any government action is THE defining characteristic of ‘modern’ liberalism.
It was a part of the NFL. The whole thing was to allow practice squad and college players to get some playing time before stepping up to the bigs.
It would mean these guys are getting beat up every day for 18 months. Not sure if their bodies could handle that.
Nope. We fought a bloody war to preserve Lincoln’s union. Freeing the slaves didn’t come til the end of the war as a tactic to ensure a union victory, not because it was the objective of the war to start with.
The NFL should really say that NFL players can play in the AAF, however if they get hurt, the NFL has the right to terminate or renegotiate the players contract. And, the NFL will not pay for the players healthcare.
Sure you have. The AAF is the NFL. It is run by ex-NFLers. The NFL receives revenue from AAF. The AAF only plays after the Super Bowl. The AAF exists because of the NFL. The AAF is a test bed for things the NFL would like to implement. Like a focus group for a food company.
I watched one game and hated it. The lack of an onside kick turned me right off.
They replaced it by giving the kicking team a chance to convert a fourth-and 12 from their own 28 to retain possession. If they convert, they get the ball right back. If they fail they give up the ball in great field position.
What coach in his right mind would risk giving up the ball on his own 28 yard line? The possibility of recovering a fumble on a 1st and ten at the opponent's 25 yard line has greater appeal and greater chances of happening. Now, if they placed the ball on 45 yard line (where most onside kick attempts wind up in the NFL) then that would be interesting.
I wouldn't care if the AAF disappears.
It isn’t the right time of year for football. Sports are seasonal for a reason. Let them compete with the NFL for viewership and they will win. College basketball? No chance.
This I news to me. I thought they were doing great.
