The United States plans to land astronauts on the moon within the next five years, Vice President Mike Pence announced today (March 26).
The nation had been shooting for a 2028 lunar touchdown, but "that's just not good enough," Pence said during the fifth meeting of the National Space Council (NSC), which he chairs. "We're better than that."
So, it is now the official policy of the United States to return astronauts to the surface of the moon by 2024, the vice president stressed, invoking a 21st-century space race with China and Russia.
"Urgency must be our watchword," Pence said at the NSC meeting, which was held at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "The United States must remain first in space in this century as in the last, not just to propel our economy and secure our nation but, above all, because the rules and values of space, like every great frontier, will be written by those who have the courage to get there first and the commitment to stay."

In five years?
Ping.
A moon base would make sense, simply landing and returning does not. Imagine the benefit of a manufacturing base, where the cost of lift-off is a fraction what it is on Earth.
Lucy and the football ;-)
Mark the date on your calendar, folks!
Why?
Moon exploration is back in fashion as nations vie in space race

Wow. Going to the moon is more feasible than building a bullet train in California.
Has @AOC explained how we’re going to power this expedition?
Good luck with that. The guys that pulled this off last time or either too old or too dead, now. And they were too damned smart, too. Not interested in a Gov't job(s) - but in a vision and willingness to beat the hell out the the Russians - at all costs, both to themselves and their families.
Since we did this 50 years ago, and technology has greatly advanced since then, shouldn’t this be a simple job, to return to the moon? They really need many years of prep time to do this?
Back in the 60s, NASA didn't have multiple missions like "Muslim outreach"
AOC is against it because everybody can’t go, and because the spacesuit only comes in white.
My guess is that the rockets will need to be built again from scratch, and while we have better technology, these things are sure to take time. Just testing alone will take years. Still, I like the idea of going to the moon. Investing in science and space exploration is much better than trying to stop cows from farting.
We didn't have to meet diversity quotas 50 years ago, EPA regulations, or (fill in the blank make work regulatory agency) requirements ...
It would be terrific if it could be done while we have President Trump. More media meltdown as they would have to compare him to JFK.

Steam train and sailboat, of course. Both use water. Water is non polluting. Everyone knows that :)
Hey, he said we were going to send them there. He didn’t say we were going to make sure they survived or had a way to get back!
Nuts. How about cutting the debt, deficit, .gov. Get rid of restrictions on importing prescription drugs, stop illegal aliens, crack down on employers who hire illegals, e verify, visa overstays, build the wall, etc
