The United States plans to land astronauts on the moon within the next five years, Vice President Mike Pence announced today (March 26).
The nation had been shooting for a 2028 lunar touchdown, but "that's just not good enough," Pence said during the fifth meeting of the National Space Council (NSC), which he chairs. "We're better than that."
So, it is now the official policy of the United States to return astronauts to the surface of the moon by 2024, the vice president stressed, invoking a 21st-century space race with China and Russia.
"Urgency must be our watchword," Pence said at the NSC meeting, which was held at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "The United States must remain first in space in this century as in the last, not just to propel our economy and secure our nation but, above all, because the rules and values of space, like every great frontier, will be written by those who have the courage to get there first and the commitment to stay."

Use that money for “the wall”, not some useless ego trip to the moon.
What’s the purpose? Another photo opp? Moon rocks?
That’s quite a reduction in goals. Trump claimed we’d put men on Mars by the end of his administration.
The technology is pretty well understood. It takes time and money to turn technology into working hardware, particularly since we wouldn’t just be copying stuff built 50 years ago. (Reverse engineering the old stuff would be even more expensive and take longer.)

I agree... Why?
Money and funding to NASA would be the only reason and it’s not a good one. About tired of all this “inventing” stuff to spend our taxpayers dollars. There are a lot more practical things that need funding like bridges and roads maybe?
The country is falling apart and we want to go to the moon... Irrational.
The astronauts who went to the moon are getting pretty old. What if they don’t want to return to the moon?
Agreed. What the hell for?
Too soon, I think. I have not seen much of any next moon landing program made public. What little has been publicly announced does not seem to me like everything would be in place - built & tested - in five years time. Nothing would be worse than a “rush to risk” - again.
Just less than a year ago NASA was speaking of a a timeline than had the next moon landing mission as 11 years away.

Love this quote...
“if NASA is not currently capable of landing American astronauts on the moon in five years, we need to change the organization, not the mission.”
Luv it! Absolutely!
What's the point of going to the moon “by any means necessary”, when we can't even stop our most self-destructive policies like mass immigration? We have so many traitors in our government that we can't even get them to halt policies that are blatantly intended to divide and weaken our country, along with the rest of western civilization. We should be focused on a total eradication of traitors, and all the problems they've created in our country within 5 years by any means necessary. That has to happen first to have any chance of long term success. Those on the far left, and in the corrupt deep state establishment, are our biggest threats. They will have to be removed before we can restore our constitution. MAGA!
