Full title;
America gets its a@@ handed to it in WW3 simulations: U.S. forces are defeated by Russia and China in almost all scenarios, analysts warn
- Nonprofit global policy think tank RAND performs simulated war scenarios to test how the US would fare against other leading military superpowers
- The simulations cover battle on land, at sea, in the air, space and cyberspace
- Analysts warned last week that the US loses to Russia or China in most scenarios
- However, they said it would take just $24billion annually to improve outcomes
- That's about three percent of the $750billion defense budget proposed for 2020

Because of cutbacks, the "machine gun" is actually a painted broomstick But they only work 35 hours per week, get 6 weeks of vacation and have a great socialized medicine program.
Oh, and I almost forgot they have the US military to protect them.

3% additional spending tips the scales in our favor? I find it hard to believe that such a little bit at the margin could have such a decisive impact. Obviously you did not read the report and the fine print carefully.
The proposed 3% additional funding includes an allocation of $20billion to the RAND corporation as a consultant to the DoD.

Their failure happened in 1974 or so. Some IBM guy threw together something to get them going.
They never corrected it, just kept building on it.
Then the poor guy who had worked on it for 40 years, using the most non-standard practices I have ever seen, got quite ill with cancer (I’m sympathetic having lost a family member). He was so ill he screwed up the code that only he knew.
Guess what? Nobody could fix this thing, not even the gal who had been there over 20 years.
But they expected me to fix it in 2.5 months. I kept telling them I can’t just hack away, it’s going to screw up all the financials. The gal and I tried a few small things but it wasn’t fixing the problem.
So I had to walk away. They weren’t going to let me stay.
Yeah, fix a 40 year old problem in 2.5 months with little or no documentation, not even practical comments in the code.
And believe me, the situation was worse from there.
Sure. I’ll just win Powerball twice a week. That will be easier.
Never saw anything like it. A complete hack job and a total silo. Without any real backups nor development structure.
I was the 2nd person in a row to give up and walk away.
Still, they can’t figure out what their main problem was.

This study implies massive waste in US defense spendingThere is massive waste in US defense spending. It's inside the expanded DC beltway spending. And that was done to buy everyone off so that Bush could get a consensus to invade Iraq. It's the deal that has brought down the US. For every fed or military employee in the Pentagon there is at least one and possibly three support service contractor coat holder and power point presentation specialist.
The consequence - a massive ripoff of the American taxpayer spent inside the DC metro area, and total utter incompetence at a level that rivals the worst corrupt third world dictatorship you have ever seen. The Republicans like it because of the money that goes to cronies. The Democrats like it because it is defense dollars that goes to jobs and not lethality.
I hope everyone gets it how those two GOPee clowns destroyed the United States.

It seems the simulation assumes nukes wont be used. Using nukes against key enemy military targets is likely a key part of our counter attack strategy and bolsters the capabilities of our conventional forces.Any "hot" war with Russia and/or China will start out nuclear with the fist strike.

I knew we were in deep trouble when I saw how much we were borrowing from China to finance the nation building.
I don’t remember the exact numbers but I was definitely taken aback.
This was a couple of years or so before the banks really went down in 2008 along with Lehman Brothers, etc.
And then along comes Barack who spends even more...
I’m just wondering when the next one is.

"If the United States had to fight Russia in a Baltic contingency or China in a war over Taiwan, Americans could face a decisive military defeat,' the Commission said in a November report...Work also warned that US military bases across Europe and the Pacific are not equipped to handle the fire they would face in a high-end conflict. The scenarios also seem to assume first strike by China or Russia

.RANDs studies were funded by the Pentagon. When would the Pentagon ever accept a result that did not urge increased defense spending? I dont blame Pentagon generals for wanting ever more military strength. That is their job. But I expect some form of civilian DoD oversight as well.

Where is Russia getting the money to fight this imagined war? How about China? Are they cashing in their bonds?

I think it was a general named Eisenhower, who knew a little bit about planning for combat.

I wanted to say Eisenhower, didn't want to embarass myself and be wrong. I'm ashamed enough I don't have the exact quote right, especially with only my first cup of coffee right now.
FFS, I'm usually much better than this and would've at least attempted to google it!

As CiC, I believe that Trump could potentially win a war.No matter who is President, half the country will be rooting for the other side.
Any "hot" war with a major power will also bring with it civil conflicts at home as various factions use the pandemonium to settle scores.
It won't be like WWII with an entire nation united behind a just cause. It'll be street fighting between left and right elements fighting each other and amongst themselves.
We have no idea of the chaos.

"If the United States had to fight Russia in a Baltic contingency or China in a war over Taiwan, Americans could face a decisive military defeat"...One of the problems is that there is this little thing called geography. Some places are very easy for others to get to and very hard for the US to get to. "Spheres of influence" is not a political abstraction. It is a law of physics. Russia can project power a couple hundred miles a whole lot easier than we can project power a few thousand. The logistics costs alone prove the point. It's why offense requires a large multiple of defensive power in order to overcome defenses. The guy who is there has a huge advantage. It's why maneuver warfare works - deny the defender the advantage of being there by going somewhere else.
Think of it the other way around. Imagine the survivability of a Russian Task Force in the Gulf of Mexico with few narrow passages out and utterly surrounded by hostile forces. The Gulf is unquestionably indisputably ours.

Yes, rand does more than this. They also create anti gun, anti American and anti freedom policy.
