Volvo is very committed to the idea of ending all fatalities in cars it builds, and its even willing to watch you like a hawk and snitch on you to make that happen. Volvo announced today it will employ in-car cameras to detect when a driver is drunk or distracted, and its cars will take specific actions when such a system is detected. I suspect you can also trigger the system by just driving like a loon, but I guess well just have to see.
The system Volvo is proposing will be introduced on all next-gen, SPA2-based vehicles, referring to Volvos the second generation of the companys modular platform, the first generation of which already underpin the companys bigger cars like the S60 and XC90. The SPA2 cars will include internal cameras focused on the driver that will:
...monitor for erratic driver behavior such as a lack of steering input, closed or averted eyes, weaving across lanes and assistance systems will intervene when necessary.
The proposed interventions include audiovisual warning signals, reducing the cars speed, alerting the Volvo on Call assistance service, and finally actively taking control of the car to pull it over and park it safely as quickly as possible.
~snip~
Basically, how well will this work? Will it deliver a lot of annoying false positives if I have allergies and keep sneezing or am dancing in my seat because Radar Love came on? Will driving while being constantly watched and monitored be something I even want, just conceptually?

“Automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars, also based in Gothenburg, was part of AB Volvo until 1999, when it was sold to the Ford Motor Company. Since 2010 it has been owned by the Geely Holding Group, CHINA’S LARGEST MULTINATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING COMPANH.”
So its really a Sinolvo, or a Volchinko!
I rarely text at all, and never while driving. In any case, I don’t need a car that monitors me. I have driven over a million miles successfully without that.
“I have never liked Volvo cars. Most of them seem to be owned by neurotic man hating feminists.”
Ditto for Saabs! They are the “Nazi Staff Cars” for the great unwashed in Berkeley, CA.
The answer to this is the same as the answer to lots of stuff: duct tape. It would even work on AOC.
Gaffers tape.
Since a camera is involved, be consistent.
If I want a Nazi staff car, get me one of those 6 wheel jobs seen on Hogan’s Heroes.
Volvo.
Chinese owned.
And we all know how those unfortunates are being treated by their gubmit.
Just imagine, you get in your car one day and it tells you that you are not qualified to drive because you tweeted something that Occasional Cortex didn’t like.
Shove it, Volvo.
Or owned by neurotic women wanna-bemen
Times must be tough in Berkeley...Saab’s been out of the biz nearly a decade
I recall several in the Obama administration crowing how wonder Red China’s system is. Now it’s bleeding over here.
No sale. What are they going to call this car- the Volvo 1984? The ‘Orwell Edition”.
I’m not so sure...
A smart guy on CNBC once said:
China has centralized planning by engineers, scientists, and technocrats.
The US has centralized planning by lawyers
They’re bound to win eventually
Perfect for teenagers along with their smart phone telling you where they were, are or heading to.
A spot of electrical tape works wonders for these cameras...
“I was tboned by a Volvo station wagon I was driving a Miata. Her car was totaled. I drove mine another ten years.”
We know this medical doctor, with two sons and one daughter.
The doctor and his sons each totaled a Volvo station wagon without any other vehicles involved. That was way before texting was here.
His wife and daughter drove their Volvo Station wagons for decades and finally traded them in for new Volvo station wagons. They have never had a wreck in any Volvo.
Reminds me of our family watching “The Martian” and how he used duct tape for everything. Character after our own heart!!!
Not to worry, the older and more clapped out, the better. Used to see an old Citroen 2CV or two there as well years ago when I was going to Engineering School there. The VW Microbusses have left the scene because they're too expensive now.
You left out turning around to holler at your kid.
Arguing with your spouse.
Day dreaming.
Singing.
Doing job work.
Rubber necking.
Adjusting your seatbelt.
Speeding.
General stupid driving.
A million things can be a distraction.
And we both forgot, shaving!
