People don't become 'adults' until their 30s, say scientists

Have you ever been told to "grow up" in your 20s or need an excuse as to why you still find cat videos on the internet really funny?

Well now you might have an official reason as to why you're not acting like a mature adult.

People don't become fully "adult" until they're in their 30s, according to brain scientists.

Currently the UK law says you become a mature adult when you reach the age of 18.

Scientists who study the brain and nervous system say the age at which you become an adult is different for everyone.

Research suggests people aged 18 are still going through changes in the brain which can affect behaviour and make them more likely to develop mental health disorders.

Maybe RAISING the voting age is the way to go.

There’s probably one-percent of the population that has reached maximum maturity at age 15, and will never advance much past that point. I mean that in the negative sense.

You are being far too conservative in your assessment, methinks.

I think that there is a significant chunk of the population whose best time in terms of net contribution to the human race occurs before puberty.

My tag line.

Adam and Eve were created as young adults, approximately 33 years old.

Skipped childhood and puberty altogether (Which is why those years are so befuddling ... we have no genetic connection to them outside of what our parents tell us and THEY'VE been intimidated to refrain from even using the WORD sex ... it's (incorrectly) .. gender )

Jesus is referred to as:

"1 Corinthians 15:45-47 King James Version (KJV)

45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven."

... so then as Jesus "reached His "maturity" at the age of 33 .... so too do men (and women), reach an age of maturity in their 30's.

Jewish scholars point to the same relative time line for men in Biblical times.

No scientist was EVER needed to tell a Christian or even religious person that.

Well, it used to be 21.

OTOH, when I was in the Air Force I was responsible for repairing multi-million dollar aircraft that other mens' lives depended on working properly.

So I think its a 'nature vs. nurture' thing. If you raise a SoyBoy, he won't be an adult until his 30s. If you raise a man, he could be a man at 17.

We all matured faster when the majority of our day was spent trying to survive.....cutting wood, gathering food, hunting, cooking, cleaning, building, etc.

As humanity progressed, the need for children to “grow up” quickly has been reduced. Now, children can focus on childhood, education and not about surviving and the struggles of everyday life.

Not long ago, when children entered the workforce, they had struggles...pay rent, food, socialize, etc. Today, those struggles are far less than ever before....delaying the maturization process.

I don’t know. I am starting to realize I believed in pretty childish things until very recently and I’m 65. Foolish things like “Our Country”.

Oh, bull-chit. The brain matures at 25, and until sometime in the 20th Century, we were damn well expected to be adults by age 21.

Mother went to work at a full-time adult job at 14 to support her family when her father died. This was in 1924.

Henry V, “Henry’s first battle [before he was king] was not against the French, but the English. At Shrewsbury on 21 July 1403 the 16-year-old Henry, Prince of Wales, lined up alongside his father to face the forces of the rebel lord, Henry Percy.

At Shrewsbury Henry led his forces well, and made a major contribution to the victory. In the course of the battle, however, he was shot in the face by an arrow that entered below his eye, missed both brain and spinal cord and stuck in the bone at the back of the skull. To remove the embedded arrowhead, special tongs had to be designed, made and carefully inserted nearly six inches into the wound to grip and extract the metal.”

Sure, these are exemplery people, but the coddling and ridiculous measures taken today to protect young adults from reality and their own foolishness has led to creating a useless group of people.

Audie Murphy entered the U.S. Army at age 17 years 10 days. By the age of 19 years 5 months he had participated in the killing of 87 Nazi soldiers, 72 by his hand alone.

I recall reading somewhere that the age of legal adulthood in 18th century France was 24. Perhaps that is the direction we should go, instead of giving children more and more rights that they do not have the maturity to exercise properly.

There is a reason the left targets the young. They need an audience that is too immature and inexperienced to see through their scams.

“Maybe RAISING the voting age is the way to go.”

My first thought precisely. People change. In this age of snowflakes, safe spaces, and group hugs, the voting age should be raised to at least twenty-five.

This is very old news.

The prefrontal cortex does not develop until age 25, and never develops in some people.

All the drug use. Both legal and illegal hinders brain development.
