Apple’s newly updated iMacs offer faster processors, much-improved graphics, and more.

Apple’s newly updated iMacs have plenty to offer enterprise and consumer users, not least of which are its faster processors and much-improved graphics performance.

At the movies
It is interesting to note that Apple chose to announce these new Macs with nothing but a press release, even though they’ve not seen significant update since WWDC 2017.

This likely reflects the importance with which the company sees the launch of its disintermediated video streaming service in March 2019 Making the decision to release updated iPads and iMacs in the week before launching the service shows the company’s determination not to divert focus from that launch.

Apple updates iMac line with dramatic performance increases
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 · 8:58 am

Apple today updated their iMac line with up to 8-core Intel 9th-generation processors for the first time and powerful Vega graphics options, delivering dramatic increases in both compute and graphics performance. From consumers to pros alike, users will notice their iMac is faster for everyday tasks all the way up to the most demanding pro workloads. This boost in performance, combined with its gorgeous Retina display, sleek all-in-one design, quiet operation, fast storage and memory, modern connectivity and macOS Mojave, makes iMac the world’s best desktop.

“Customers are going to love the huge boost in iMac performance. With up to 8-core processors and powerful Vega graphics, the iMac lineup is stronger than ever,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing, in a statement. “With its stunning Retina display, amazing design, twice the performance, and macOS Mojave that our customers love, iMac is by far the best desktop in the world.”

iMac now delivers up to two times faster performance for a wide range of computing tasks.

Up to 8-Core Intel 9th-Generation Processors

With updated processors across the line, customers will experience dramatically faster performance for a wide range of everyday computing tasks, from editing photos to playing demanding games, composing music or even creating a feature film.

Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Come to iMac for the First Time

Radeon Pro Vega graphics come to the 21.5-inch iMac, delivering up to 80 percent faster graphics performance. The 27-inch iMac with Radeon Pro Vega now delivers up to 50 percent faster graphics performance, ideal for pros with graphics-intensive workloads, such as developing 3D content, editing videos with complex effects or designing high-resolution games.

Industry’s Best 4K and 5K Retina Displays

With up to 14.7 million pixels, 1 billion colors, 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color gamut and an incredible viewing angle, iMac’s Retina display delivers an immersive front-of-screen experience. All these pixels result in text that looks like a printed page, sharper photos with more detail, and the ability to edit 4K video at full resolution.

Unrivaled All-in-One Design Elevates Any Space

With its sleek aluminum and glass enclosure, 5 millimeter-thin profile and beautiful matching keyboard and mouse, iMac delivers a clean and uncluttered desktop experience that allows users to focus more on their content. With everything they need and nothing they don’t, customers love how iMac fits seamlessly into so many different environments, from the home, to businesses of all sizes, or even a pro studio.

Pricing and Availability

The new 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display starts at $1,299 and the new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display starts at $1,799. The non-Retina display iMac configuration continues to be available for $1,099. Additional technical specifications, configure-to-order options and accessories are available online at apple.com/mac.

Don’t see price cuts. . . Just more bang for the same buck.

Unfortunately I quit using a desktop at home back around the Quadra days (Wow, that's about 15 years ago). The "tower" sat out-of-sight in a special compartment of my desk, so the desktop was the keyboard, mouse, the HUGE monitor and the speakers. I replaced it with a Gen 1 MacBook Pro around 2006.

I would love to have one of these gorgeous new iMacs, but there's nowhere to put it in our house. All my work is done on my MacBook Pro literally sitting on my lap and only occasionally at the dining room table. We don't even have a desk in the house anymore now that the kids have all moved out.

Nice, but not sure they can compare with my 43” iPC with 4K display and klipsch speakers.

(Not interested in all in one units, either. I guess I’m just a mid-tower troglodyte)

Big prices for i5’s. The i9’s are stratospheric.

Isn't Apple one of the main bad liberal bit-techs, along with Twitter, Facebook and Google? Isn't an investment in Apple just an incentive for Tim Cook to donate more money to silencing conservatives and helping various liberal causes?

It's a fully converged company. Do you really want to give them your hard earned money?

I still have a iMac G5 on a side desk in my home office. Have not used it in quite awhile but it was a great machine. Documented a whole lot of memories using Final Cut Express on that machine.

Then again I still have most Macs I’ve owned over the years including my computer which was a 512K Fat Mac. It’s in the cellar somewhere.

I am so irritated at their lack of new Mac Pros!

I’ve got a Mac Pro, the “trash can” one with no expandability and it’s four years old. My Apple Care warranty ran out last year.

I always replace my Pro machines after the Apple Care runs out, and I can’t do it now because there’s no new machines to buy!

I can’t use an iMac as I have two 30” Dell monitors, one for my apps, the other for the tools and palettes, and an iMac has an integral display, one I can’t use.

I don’t want a cube, the Mini, as I need Xeon servers and error correcting RAM.

I use my Mac for my profession and I’m on it sometimes 12 hours a day.

Everyone I know who used to use Pro Macs have switched to HP, Lenovo or Dell workstations, but my entire workflow is Mac and has been for the last 25 years.

I cannot stand how Apple has so completely abandoned the Pro market!

Ed

Hmmmm. Are they?

4 That $71.06 is a very small difference. . . and the Apple iMac comes loaded with a slew of software worth far more than that. You could save money by getting a refurbished LG or Dell 27" 5K monitor. Those are available on Amazon for under $1,000.
