Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recalled how her public-school teachers thought she needed “remedial education” because she had grown up speaking Spanish at home.
The freshman lawmaker, speaking Saturday at a packed town hall organized by the Jackson Heights People for Public Schools, said, “As a child I spoke Spanish first. … and I went to a school where no one looked like me. I went to a school where teachers thought I needed remedial education because I spoke two languages instead of one.”

She said when she “first” went to school.
That would be kindergarten or first grade, no?
Five or six years old.
So she was still in NYC then.
I'd like to hear her speak Spanish. Why hasn't she spoken Spanish at any of her "campaign" meets? Or has she??
She should take up wilderness camping to see how her ideas of reality work out in nature.;-)

That is 500 bucks each. Heck I was paying 500 month in the late 70s just a few years after college. With a degree from BU why didn’t she have a real job bilingual and all?

1926 same with my mom. No English spoken at home. Started school speaking only a foreign language. Mom ended up speaking English without a foreign accent and it became her primary language.
Her father was a highly educated architect and they lived in Westchester Co. Why would her father speak English as a professional outside the home and only Spanish in the home?
She’s right about NYC schools..........they suck!
She is Ignorant of how LIFE works. Much less government. When was the last time Civic/Government was taught in our Public Schools.

Years ago when I was registering my son for grade school, one of the questions on the form is what language is spoken in your home. I put down English and Spanish. The principal asked me, does your son speak English well? I said he speaks very little Spanish but is totally fluent in English. The principal then said, “take Spanish off the form, otherwise we will have to evaluate him for instruction in Spanish.” I did.
