I just learned this, and I was quite surprised. Chile's area is over 290,000 square miles; Ukraine, the largest country in Europe other than European Russia, has an area of under 235,000 square miles.
For an American used to Mexican spanish the Chilean spanish takes some getting used to. They sound like they truncate the ends of some words.
Since my wife and I only speak a very basic spanish most people there assumed we were Brazilian. Once to take a picture I turned my baseball hat on backwards so I had room for the camera - that was the only time someone thought we were Americans.
The flags of Chile and Texas are quite similar.
At 268,000 square miles, TEXAS is larger that any European country other than Russia.
Forget about Texas.
At 663,268 square miles, ALASKA is way more than twice the size of Texas and much larger than than any European country other than Russia. Cut it in half and Texas becomes the third largest state.

But of course, it turned out to be Texas.

Yet the population for this vast land is pretty much the same as California, with most residents within 150 miles of the US border.
Yeah, but most of it is on a slant. :)
