A former Florida police officer is accused of using police databases while he was on the force to find women whom he could potentially date, authorities say.
Officer Leonel Marines of the Bradenton Police Department allegedly misused his access to law enforcement resources to contact around 150 women, finding their social media accounts, calling them on the telephone, and even visiting the homes of some under the guise of police business.
Marines, who was a 12-year employee with the department, often targeted Hispanic women, and was sometimes successful, Bradenton Police Chief Melanie Bevan said at a press conference last week.
Bevan said her department first learned of Marines activities in June 2018. After an encounter in a parking lot, Marines followed a woman home. He then knocked on the door of her parents home demanding to speak to their daughter about a domestic matter.
The womans parents wouldnt allow Marines to enter and called police to let them know what happened after Marines refused to give the couple his information and left.
Soon after, Bradenton police started investigating Marines and looked at his use of police databases.
There was a very, very clear trend of Marines focusing on female versus male names, Bevan said.
Marines, who had a supervising role at the department, was put on desk duty at the beginning of the investigation. As the department learned more about his actions, he was ultimately placed on unpaid administrative leave, and stripped of his badge, gun, and uniforms.
Marines resigned in October of last year.
While BPDs administrative case has concluded, this remains a very active and open criminal investigation which is being handled by the FBI, Bevan said. It goes without saying that this is not what our officers should be doing with their access to info or their time.
This is truly a disturbing situation for me as chief, Bevan added. Over the past few weeks, she said she has met with several women whom Marines allegedly targeted in an effort to regain their trust in the Bradenton Police Department.
NBC News could not immediately reach Marines for comment.
Do they even have a test to become a LEO in Florida? Sheesh, the last guy hide in the stairwell as students were being shot.
One of your friends stands up and screams, “WE’RE DRIVIN’ TO FLORIDA!!!!!” and passes out.
Women really like stalkers..../sar
Fired and then prosecuted as bare minimum
Why not have cameras showing the upward view of the criminal? Because the costly systems are put there mostly to watch the employees.
You’re right.
I think there are some sort of under the glass tops of counters. I was just going by a series of conversations on sites about workers discussing cameras. When we had ours put in there was talk about the topics and I looked some up.
I think your statement is right—most of the time where would they be positioned?
A woman at work said after they were putting more and more cameras in that the next places will be just behind the toilet seats in all the rest rooms. She said “Let ‘em.”
On reflection, the camera’s being placed so as to watch the employee fails on practical grounds, too.
If they’re worried about the employee taking money out of the till, that’s going to show up when the register is balanced for the next shift. The employee would be responsible for any shortfall, anyway. And if they worried the employee is going to feed off the merchandise, evading the coverage of the camera would be a trivial matter.
Sounds like cameras are useless. It took me a long time to get used to them always watching me at the library at work, innocent as I was and never handling money anyway for many years. The public, though, were worth watching.
1) a misguided screwed up nineteen year old thought it would be funny to make a water puddle form on the men’s room floor. He stood on a counter and pulled on a pipe from above the acoustic ceiling tiles——
and set off a waterfall that flooded the carpets and ruined the lower shelf of books for about 500 feet. Electrical damage, too. Cost tens of thousands in loss. Caught on video going in and running out soaking wet. He confessed.
2) racist anti black graffiti on college campus building walls outside. Demonstrations blocked traffic and shut down classes off an on for weeks. A few confrontations against white students going to class.
After thousands of hours of perusal of many cameras’ digital recordings police identified and then caught the man: a black man in his mid 30s, not a college student, who wanted to rile up battles against white students.
I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve watched a lot of ‘The Bachelor’ this season. It’s amazing to me how these people can emote the way they do with cameramen all over the room, some right in their face.
A wall mounted camera would soon become invisible to me from repeated exposure, but a guy in my house? People who insist reality shows are scripted don’t impress me, but ordinary people acting ordinary with a face full of cameras does. LOL
$$$$$$$$$$
No amount of money could make me act un-self-consciously in a room full of cameras. Maybe that’s why my chances are so slim of winning an Oscar.
That’s why you’re not a star
You got it.
Divorce lawyers routinely subpoena public security camera footage to use as evidence in negotiations.

Once again proof there is a good reason for following each of the Ten Commandments.
One time the suspicious owner of the Yankees George Steinbrenner wanted to see if players were keeping late hours and getting into trouble. He had a private detective secretly follow Tony Kubek to see what he was up to. The destination turned out to be playing ping pong for hours at the local YMCA. Kubek was probably the most innocent player of his era.
