The 293 hospitals with 5 stars from CMS
Beckers Hospital Review ^ | March 7, 2018 | Mackenzie Bean

Posted on 03/11/2019 7:06:20 PM PDT by buckalfa

CMS updated its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings in February, recognizing 293 hospitals with five stars.

CMS' Hospital Compare website reports on quality measures for more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide. Here is a breakdown of the updated star ratings:

One star: 282 hospitals Two stars: 800 hospitals Three stars: 1,264 hospitals Four stars: 1,086 hospitals Five stars: 293 hospitals The new star ratings come eight months after CMS postponed its July 2018 update for the second consecutive year due to methodology changes. The updated methodology includes removal of measures with statistically negative loadings and a change to how hospital-acquired infection measures are calculated.

Below is a listing of CMS' five-star hospitals for February, broken down by state, as listed on the Hospital Compare website. To view a list of CMS' 1-star hospitals for February, click here.

This a list of what Medicare considers to be the best of the best hospitals in the United States. Hopefully your family can avail themselves of a 5 star hospital if the need arises. Still one has to ask the question are these hospitals good at delivering quality patient care or are they good at doing the documentation that Medicare requires. Hopefully they do both.

Tampa General not on the list???

Something not adding up....

By far the best hospital in the Tampa bay area.

Other hospitals that make the top of other lists in Florida aren’t mentioned such as the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Tampa General as you say is always highly rated.

One usually says what an acronym means before it is used. CMS?

AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City campus...hey - where I had surgery last spring - good modern place, fine nursing care....

On the other hand, ratings are (or used to be at least) based on things such as are progress notes up to date and were the fire extinguishers inspected within the last year - it's hard to make direct comparisons on patient care because the best hospitals - like those in Philadelphia, for example, none of which got "Five Stars" - usually get the sickest patients, many of whom end up dying - that doesn't look too good in the ratings......

Apologies Fungi, CMS is the Center For Medicare/Medicaid Services. They administer the Medicare and Medicaid programs for the federal government.

where does the CMS get their data from, as it seems to have left out this hospital in Baltimore Maryland?

“The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). Opened in 1889, the Johns Hopkins Hospital now encompasses 33 operating rooms, the Sheikh Zayed Tower, the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, the Nelson/Harvey Building, and adult and pediatric emergency departments. In 2016, the hospital’s surgeons performed the world’s first liver transplant with an HIV-positive donor and recipient. The Johns Hopkins Hospital ranks as the third-best hospital in the nation and No. 1 hospital in Maryland, according to 2017-18 rankings by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital is also nationally ranked for 15 adult specialties and 10 children’s specialties.”

Doesn’t make sense. One little country Appalachian hospital in Kentucky beat out all the Louisville and Lexington ones? Some doing medical breakthrough transplants. Would like to know what the judgments were based on.

I have 20+ years experience at one of the world's most famous hospitals (which happens to be on the list) and I can assure everyone that even after a quick glance at it this list is a load of horse dung.

One hospital listed for the entire State of New York? There are a half dozen in NYC alone that are among the finest on earth. And not a single hospital listed in the State of Connecticut, home of Yale Medical School?

Trust me,boys and girls...do *not* use this as a *comprehensive* or *complete* list of the nation's outstanding hospitals.

Yup,another one of the several glaring omissions I noticed in my very quick review of the list.Hopkins, along with Harvard,Mayo Clinic and a few others,is considered by those who know to be in the very *top* tier of medicine.

CMS criteria for rating hospitals is utter nonsense and almost nothing to do with a hospital’s ability to deliver quality health care.

it’s a bunch of stupid metrics like every staff member washing their hands each time they enter a room, and they’re the kind of things that are easy to game by simply focusing on the metrics and pretty much ignoring common sense care ...

“Still one has to ask the question are these hospitals good at delivering quality patient care or are they good at doing the documentation that Medicare requires.”

The answer to that question is that they are good at doing the documentation that Medicare requires. Also, many of these hospitals have lower acuity than other hospitals, and therefore their outcomes (e.g. length of stay, recurrent admission, etc.) will be better. If you know medicine, you know that lists like this are pretty much worthless, and that the criteria used by outcomes analysts and government healthcare bean counters are disturbingly out of touch and ridiculous.

Yep. Absolutely. But the ‘outcomes analysis people’, including many physicians who aren’t respected as physicians by other physicians, are the ones directing health care these days.
